Machine breaks needles
1.make sure you are using the right needle for your type of sewing machine.
Most machines can use generic Schmetz needles. There are cases where the machine will only use ones specified in the owners manual.
2.the presser foot may not be installed properly
3.use the correct needle for the type of fabric you are working with. To fine of needle on heavy fabric or to course a needle on silk or jersey can damage fabric. make sure the correct needle for silk is being used.
4.let the feed dogs guide the fabric & the feed dogs will work with the presser foot .
5.the needle is not all the way in -push all the way up against the stop

also clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for lint or loose
threads
check to make sure the feed dogs are completely in the up position

if none of these suggestions work then it's possible that the machine
is out of time & would have to retimed at a sewing machine shop

SOURCE: sewing machine problem

Not knowing what type of machine you have I just have to say there are three letters to remember... T-N-T. Thread, Needle, Tension. Since this is obviously not a tension problem you have to make sure the machine is threaded correctly. Incorrect threading will cause this as will the bobbin in upside down and turning the wrong way. Then there is the needle. Be sure it is inserted properly. My opinion is the needle is in wrong or the bobbin is turning the wrong way. Good Luck. Rick

SOURCE: Sears Kenmore 1168280 (Old machine not used much)

Untangle any mess under and around the needleplate very gingerly trimming threads as you go if necessary....remove and clear.

Undo the needle clamp and remove the remains of the needle.

Open the door for the bobbin and bobbin case and undo the clips holding the hook in place......don't force anything, just ease any tangle loose slowly.

You may want to take a photo of how it goes back together if unfamiliar, or lay the bits out sensibly, so you can replace easily later.

Inside the bobbin/hook area is the most likely region for thread jamming the motion of everything, so make sure all is clear and clean, then.......

Without replacing the bobbin or hook, test the handwheel after cleaning before re-assembly.

You may also want to check the take-up crank for thread jams........the small arm in the top cover that moves up/down to "take-up" the top thread has a cam attached to the top shaft and often tangles thread around the shaft, open the L side cover to access.......remove thread by unwinding handwheel manually ....again be patient and careful not to break threads.

Best Wishes

SOURCE: pulling on top thread bunches my fabric

Either the top tension is too tight or the lower tension is too loose.

I have a sewing machine. When I try to use it, the bobbin thread bunches up into a mess and stops the cloth from advancing. HOW do I solve this problem?

Sounds like what is normally referred to as "bird nesting" or thread nesting which is essentially caused, in the majority of cases, by incorrect threading.

Advise your wife to always raise the presser foot when threading the machine. This releases the tension disk so the thread will seat properly. If the thread is not seated in the tension disk, the upper thread will loop and knot under the fabric causing "birds nests"--an ugly mess of thread!

Be sure to install new needles frequently. A bent, dull, or nicked needle will be the cause of many frustrations. Also, avoid old or bargain bin thread. And use the proper needle for the thread and fabric of the project.

The correct tension has been achieved when the upper thread and bobbin thread meet in the middle of the fabric. The starting point is usually the midway point between high & low tension number, and then testing and tweaking. This does not mean, however, that the tension needed for corduroy fabric will work on silk. There is usually some tweaking involved with every project, ie needle size & type, thread weight & material, type of fabric (heavy, light, knit, woven, etc.)

Start to sew and it doest stitch & fabric gets bunched up on the right looper

I take it this is a serger from the fact you have a looper. Try changing which looper thread is on top when you thread it. Mine jams if they're not done just right. BTW, the easiest way to thread a serger once you've got it once is to tie the new thread to the old and pull it through.

Hope this helps.

I have a Brother LS-1717 sewing machine and my thread keeps breaking. We've oiled it but it hasn't acted right for years, it hasn't seemed to matter what the settings are on or what...

here are somethings to try,
1. change the needle--flat side goes to the back of the machine
2. check the tension see if it's too tight,,usually 4 to 5 is good
3. rethread the machine top thread & bobbin area
4. check to see if there are any burrs on the needle plate where the feed dogs are (teeth area)
5. you said that you made a comforter for your husband using thick fabric,,some sewing machine are not good at sewing comforters & other heavy fabric,, it's possible that the machine is out of time, which means it will not sew good & mess up,, which means it needs to be serviced by a repair shop technican to see if it is out of time.
