Check the micro switch that is attached to the tape run out arm. If open the reel motors will not operate.

The Capstan motor is just for the play speed regulation so it has nothing to do with the reel motors. You can have an open safety microswitch or maybe a bad relay. It is really hard to say without looking at the unit but I am sure it is repairable. Is the right dummy plug put in the back? This can stop all transport functions if it is out.

SOURCE: Teac X1000R Reel to reel

Hi there. It will need a new pinch roller, and has a bias oscillator. problem. From memory, they use a module for the oscillator, and the pinch rollers are easy to get. Sorting out the bias may be the problematic part, and you will need to recalibrate the bias traps and controls if you want max performance from the unit once repaired. I would go about checking things like intermittent tape bias switch, and try wriggling the record play switch( internally) and see if you can get erase and rec back. Noisy intermittent switches can caused the symptoms you have.

If you are able to, I would be seeking a refund. If not, then repairs are feasible. Let me know where you are and I can help you find a repair guy. Cheers

SOURCE: RS-TR272 dual deck and capstans seem to be locked

DO NOT spray anything into this unit. The problem is a slipping belt and is a simple fix for any audio shop. While possible, it is rare for a motor to fail. There is a small belt that drives the take up side along with a felt clutch assembly that can slip. If this is the case, the unit will realize that the take-up reel is not turning and shutdown the unit. Please have this serviced. The belts will run around $6-$10 total.

Ensure the rubber pinch roller presses the tape against the capstan drive shaft....ensure the capstan drive motor is turning..and the belt to the flywheel is snug, and not slipping. the tape transport engage relay might be stuck...a relay maybe corroded ...may need cleaning. Without seeing it cant say clearly what may be the problem. also ensure the tape tension/shut-off arm is under tension by tape that is correctly installed.

My reel to reel will not play.

You need a new capstan belt or the capstan shaft is glazed as well as you have a hard shiny Pinch Roller. Each of these items need to have friction to work.

When play button is pressed it switches itself off after a couple of seconds on Sony cassette deck

When a deck is stored for some time, the belts perish, or the belt on the main capstan drive motor ends up with tight bend in it, where it has been on the pulley for a while. On start up, the belt will drop off the flywheel.
Take off the lid and investigate. For fast forward & rewind the reel motor drives it, this motor also is used for take up on play.
If the capstan(s) are not running, the take up will not work. Most machines have a sensor on the feed spool, if this does not rotate, it will switch off so as not to feed a load of tape with nowhere to go.
Google your deck number for drive belts.

TEAC R-H300 Forward Play Fault

The unit need some work by a technician. The bad thing about the drawer type decks is that it makes it hard or impossible to clean the tape path. I have not seen one of these but I could probably fix it.
Some of your description sound like a loose capstan belt and then other times the Pinch roller is not engaging- they may be related if the mechanism is tied to the capstan motor system.

Just aquired a teac a3440. The unit powers up and reels spin and in fast forward or reverse they work fine. After loading a tape there doesnt seem to be enough power to spin the reels. Please help David

moz-screenshot-1.pngI can give you a figure. Here can be seen the tape transport parts location. This probably will help you fix the problem:

Cassette tape on boombox (panasonic '80/'90) won't play & when it does it eats the tape.

Hi, I remember this problem. Your " take up spindle " isn't turning. This will be the one that also fast forwards the tape, so if the fast forward doesn't work you probably have a bad rubber band that drives it, or motor for a more sophisticated model. Also this symptom could be cause by debris that has built up on the " capstan " the little silver spike that will be close to the tape heads ( also on occasion has caused tapes to be eaten-so make sure it is clean, rubbing alcohol for this-same thing for the capstan.) I hope this was useful, write back to let me know-even if it wasn't so I may try again, thanks for asking FixYa-good luck, Prodzilla

My Teac 4070G reel to reel tape deck rewind and fast forward functions work, but the play function does not. Any ideas? Could it be a circuit?

Without actually seeing your Teac reel deck, i suggest you verify that all fuzes in the deck are good..not blown. Also with a tape correctly installed..ensure that left and right tape tension arms are held under tension/ closed by tape tension, also ensure the capstan shaft is rotating... look in back to ensure the capstan drive motor is running.. if yes, and tape still will not play... problem could be a stuck/failed solenoid, dirty or corroded push buttons, or corrosion on contacts where rear circuit boards/plugs insert into other boards.
