Can't link my archos to my laptop

I've got a (fairly) old Archos AV 500 (100gb) which links to my desktop, but won't link to my laptop. Is there anything obvious that I'm missing? The laptop doesn't even recognise it when connected.

1. Copy all factory installed files from the Archos on to your PC hard drive or write a CD / DVD.
2. Download the latest software from www.Archos.com and keep a copy safe (not on the Archos!) … there was a new version last week by the way …1.5.12
3. If you record any films, music, or TV that you want to keep forever then don’t keep them on the Archos!
4. Factory installed samples (photos & films), wallpaper, etc are available for download from FTP://support.archos.com
5. If you need to format the drive but it won’t talk to the PC through the normal USB, try plugging a flash memory card (the bigger the better) into the other (left hand) USB socket and copy stuff onto it.
6. Avoid changing back & forward between ‘hard drive’ and ‘windows device’ … not sure if this was the cause of the problem but you never know!
7.Always have mains power (not battery) when moving files around.

Archos 70 won't turn on
I have the 8gig Archos 70, the whole thing froze as described in other posts. The solution is not for the feint of heart though. Mine would do absolutely nothing. So what the heck, I opened it up (nothing to lose at this point). Messed about a bit. Read that when it "Bricks" like this there is nothing that can be done. If it is Bricked, something locks it in the memory and function. As long as the battery is connected, it will remain that way no matter what.

Solution. Cut the black power wire from the battery (there are three long wires red white and black), leave for 20 minute, and solder the wire back together and heat shrink the joint. Reassemble, plug in power cord and it should reboot...

My archos is about 3-4 years old, and is mounted to the wall in my kitchen for use as an internet radio

Every time that i click on my favorite icon,my archos 7 re boot it self,shut down then start back up.will not let me get into my favorite's files. any solution.
Hi, when this happens it usually means the operating system is corrupt, the best thing to do is to reflash your Archos, you obtain the required software and then plug into the USB port and then using the proprietary software to reflash the internal memory on the Archos to replace the operating system, and restore it to functionality, if you ONLY copy over the system files you will keep all you old settings.
You need to go to the Archos website to obtain the Firmware also there is s "How to" reflash your Archos 7.

What type of browser does the archos 7 have? I know it is not windows internet explorer like on my laptop.

Broken screen
Here are a couple of links of were to get a replacement LCD Screen.
It should come apart fairly easy and the lcd ribbon should unplug so then you can place the new one in and plug it in.
I hope this helps to give you an idea of the cost.

ave got same prob mate tried to download the firmware as red on the archos site in questions and answers fairly helpful but my computer does not put the archos on my desktop for me to transfer the files rang archos in holand apperently it means it is faulty and i am n the process of sending mine back advise you o rinng them on the 02 n0. that came with the item goodluck
