The shutter will not release most of the time. When it does, and it is a daylight picture, it is very overexposed. If you are using an older lens the aperture ring will be close to the camera body when the lens is on the camera. In order to set the aperture with a D80 and older lens you must set the aperture ring to "22" or the highest number on the aperture ring available. For newer lenses there is no aperture ring. You set the aperture by setting the dial on the top left of the D80 to "A" for Aperture Priority. You then set the aperture by rotating the front dial on the right side of the camera under the shutter release button. On older lenses, after setting the aperture ring to the highest number, you then set the aperture in the same manner.
"rXX" is just the camera estimate of how many pictures left on memory card. As for "ERR": while camera is in "On" position, take out battery and hold shutter button approximately 30 seconds. Turn camera "off, replace battery and turn "On" again. If thre is a hardware reset button (check manual carefully) while camera is "On" use that reset button/
i had a similar problem - it was the interface between the lens and camera - some of the connectors were stuck depressed, i just poked them and they popped back out.
This sounds like the mechanism has worn. It is a straight forward service centre procedure, I wouldn't recommend trying to do anything that will make it worse. Leave it to Nikons engineers.
If the lighting is low and shutter speed is set for a long period of time its the function of the camera taking the picture. If it is a malfunction of the shutter take it in for cleaning you might have foriegn material stuck in your shutter mechanism
contactjoni,
Your shutter will stick if it gets dirty or dust gets in the camera, a reputable camera shop can inspect the shutter, the sensor for dust & dirt and can clean it for you. If the battery is low while shooting the shutter can also stick on longer exposures.
