I have a briggs 18 h.p. 422700 I have changed the coil every year for 3 years. The kill wire is good. this engine does not belong on this mower but I have managed to make it fit. The ground wire runs to a simple toggel switch to the coil kill ground this works fine for one season. any way to test the coils I have ?

You could check for continuity with an ohm meter, but I don't know what the resistance of a good coil is. BTW. coils almost never go bad.

Check the voltage on the battery to see if it is 12 volts or higher. If not, charge battery.

Then check all starting-related electrical connections-- sounds like there is a dirty connection somewhere if the battery is charged.

SOURCE: Engine worked fine last week and for 3 minutes

IF THE ENGINE STILL TURNS OVER YOU MAY BE ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES ON THE OHV ENGINES PULL THE VALVE COVERS AND SEE IF ALL THE TAPPET RODS ARE THERE IF NOT THIS COULD BE WHAT IS BOUNCING AROUND INSIDE
WORST CASE IF ENGINE WILL NOT TURN OVER THE CONNECTING ROD TO THE PISTON COULD BE BROKEN

Try to determine if the safety switch on the seat is closing or opening.
Does this happen when you are sitting on the seat and engage the blades?

You're ight, if you have gas and spark it should run, if the mixture is right.

Good luck on this one.

I HAVE A BRIGGS AND STRATTON ENGINE THAT IS NOT FIRING ,i NEED HELP

Hello Rodger. I'm George. Try this. Pull the engine cover off and using a 3 x 5 index card to set the gap between the coil and flywheel magnets. Once you do that, try and start the engine. If this doesnt work, locate the wire going to the coil. Pull it off and move it away from the flywheel to keep it from getting cut and start the engine. This will isolate the coil from all of the safety switches that come on today's mowers. If it starts, your coil is good and you have a safety switch that is causing the problem. You will have to choke the engine to get it to stop because the wire you took of the coil is your kill wire. If the engine doesn't start, your coil is bad and needs replaced. Good Luck and Thanks. George

Vanguard Briggs & Stratton won't shut down

Your kill wire from the switch to the coil is bad, disconnected or connections dirty...or switch is bad...try disconnecting the kill wire on the coil and using a jumper ground the coil directly to the engine or frame it should shut down if it does it is the wire or switch do the same at the switch if it shuts down it is the switch..if not the wire has a break..good luck..

I have a Woods Zero Turn Mow n Machine powered

Try taking the cover off to get to the fly wheel and use some fine sandpaper or emery cloth to clean off the magnets on the fly wheel and the two little prongs that set really close to the fly wheel.
My white wouldn't start right away and I did the above and now it starts great.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks
