Question about NetTV DTV34XF3 34" TV

1 Answer

No sound or Picture, Just a hissing sound.

This tv was used in a movie theater where I work. It showed showtimes of the movies and lasted for about nine months. I would have to say that it was on for those nine months with only a few power downs. We used the rs-232 port for the video from a dell computer using powerpoint. One day we were doing some cleaning and without turning off the computer or the tv the cable was unplugged and the picture on the tv flashed off. When the cable was put back on like normal the tv showed nothing. We tried to power off the tv and power it back on, only this time there was a hissing noise in the tv. The power led comes on green when the tv should be on and stays yellow when it is off. after taking the back off the tv the hissing could not be pinpointed. There are no visble fuses that have blown. the tv shows no menus or anyother sort of picture when you change video inputs. Thank you for you time please help. Pyrodizzle

Well what sounds like happened is you blew up the tube in it. have you unplugged it from the wall and just let it sit some times that helps because what will happen is there will be a Electrical build up and it won't work right. an other thing you might want to do is hit the Degauss button on the remote. plug some sort of video signal into it and go through the inputs to see if that helps, mine did that every thing would just be black but i plug in my video camera it would detect it and make sure that the audio cables are plugged in these TV might just be that old that they have to have both audio and video in order to work.

Blu Ray doesn't seem to work correctly

In all reality you are probably not doing anything wrong. You have a great TV and a pretty good BluRay player.

One thing about looking at movies in a store is usually you look at the screen further away than you usually do at home. Also, some of the demo disks they use are recored at a higher bit rate than many movies you can buy. Store displays are designed to show off TV units to make them sell, they do not care about them after you leave the store.

Many people do not know that some Bluray movies can actually look worse than DVD. Avatar for example is encoded at an average of 28 Mpbs on Bluray, and Avatar on DVD is encoded at around 7 Mbps. However, note that a 1080p screen has 6 times as many pixels as DVD, but in this case only 4 times the amount of data for the picture, so in all actuality Bluray has a lower quality picture per pixel than DVD. Some Bluray movies claim that they are 1080p, but are encoded as low as 14 Mbps (They do this so they can fit the movie on a single layer Bluray disk instead of the standard dual layer disks.) Another thing to note is that the color 'black' on Bluray is like 'Bass' on an MP3, in that they both require high bit rates. A low bitrate on Bluray will produce a grainy black picture, and on an MP3 a low bitrate will make the bass sound tinny. A great example of this is the movie 'Crash' which looks way better on DVD than that of Bluray.

From my experience, the best Bluray movies to show off your system are the BBC's 'Natural Earth', and 'Doctor who' like 'Planet of the dead.' Dr who is 1080i, but is encoded at the highest bitrate that I have seen on any Bluray movie so far, and looks outstanding.

Good Luck

Movie will not play on Apple TV

Dear Ray,
You say that the movie does not show up on your apple tv but does it show that the movie is the movies folder? Also, make sure in settings that you have your account authorized, and make sure the internet, network, and computer settings are correct.
Hope This Works.

Not to computer saavy so please keep it simple. I have a Sony Vaio VGC RA840G desktop with 5.1 surround sound. Also have a Samsung LN46A850 S1F HDTV. Also a home theater system. This is hooked up to cable...

From the looks of the TV manual you have everything right, so it's very odd you're running into this problem.

Have you tried swapping through the sources? I find with one of the TVs we have on display at work that any time I'm having some troubles with it I will change the source from PC to something else, then back to PC.

If that doesn't work then I'd suggest you try reseting the sound settings back to factory default. The instructions are on page 45 of the TV manual. From the TV menu select "Sound", then "Sound Reset", then either "Reset All" or "Reset Sound Mode". I would suggest reseting all.

Last option would be to try using the headphone jack in the side of the TV, though this is a last resort kind of thing since you would have to unplug it every time you wanted to use the cable box.

Hope this helps :)
