My generator does not throttle up automatically

Although I can manually adjust the throttle and thus produce power, my generator used to do it automatically, what needs mending please?

    How are you with Honda Gens??

    The idle control switch works, manually, but not automatically.

    Any thoughts?? Model EB5000X

Hi there,
I've posted an answer to a somewhat related problem here
but you should read that later as I think you want a better idea of how the whole thing works.

Inside the control box on the generator the power leads get connected so that we have an L1, L2, and N feed wire with L1 and L2 being the 2 "hot" wires. Both of the hot wires pass thru a small current transformer (one wire in each direction) and then go to the various outlets in the output panel. The current transformer makes a signal whenever current is drawn thru either wire.

The current transformer sends its signal to an idle control circuit on a printed circuit board inside the control box. The other wires from this board go to the idle control switch, the power regulator/exciter board, and the idle control solenoid. The idle control board uses the DC voltage it gets from the regulator/exciter to energize the idle control solenoid if the idle control switch isn't in the "off" position and no signal has come from the current transformer for a sufficient time. The idle control solenoid acts to pull the throttle assembly until the throttle bell crank hits the idle adjustment screw (whew!)

Troubleshoot it like this:
1 - Does the engine start at governed speed and then idle down or does it start at idle? If it starts at idle, or seems to idle down faster than usual, something might be amiss in the works.

2 - When you turn the idle control switch to "off" does the engine rev up to governed speed immediately? If not there is almost certainly something ugly going on.

3 - With the idle control solenoid unplugged from the idle control board does the engine rev up to governed speed? If it won't you need to check to see if the plunger is stuck on the idle control solenoid. Some solenoids also have an adjustment that can get loose, check the voltage on the wires coming out of the idle control board if you're in doubt about its being energized or not.

4 - If the generator revs up when you turn the idle control off, but won't do it automatically when current is drawn with it turned on you need to check the current transformer with an ohm meter. Even though this is an AC signal you should mark the leads when you take them off so that they go back from whence they came - it's a noise thing ;-) Little square current transformers in Coleman Powermates are usually somewhere in the 1 - 2 Kohm range, failures are typically that the coil opens up.

My GX160 powering a generator won't rev up to produce power. Is the governor adjustable or has it failed?

Your governor is adjusted for the correct 60 hertz cycles. You may have lost residual voltage to excite the generator to produce ac. Being that it was sitting long time.
I could explain in lengthy conversations but you could just google : how to excite a generator and there is good write ups online as well if not better than what I could explain in detail.

Output voltage adjustment

Output voltage is based on 3600 rpm @ 60Hz. Sounds like your generator is over speeding slightly. Put a Frequency meter on the output of the generator and tune it to 61.5 Hz, that will get your generator in the 3600 RPM range.

What problem a change over switch caurses to a 60kva diesel gen set

is the auto transfer switch rated to handle a 60 kva gen set cus you can use a larger auto switch on a smaller gen set but it don't work the other way cus you'll be burning up wires and contactors and have a fire !

Can I change a 10hp generator motor with an automatic throttle to a manual throttle?

Yes, you will be able to control the throttle. Look for a lever that pulls on the governor spring. On some generators, the governor spring attaches to an arm with adjustment screw and locknut or metal tab that bends into position. All that you need do is to pull on the governor spring to increase rpm. The governor spring pulls on the governor arm that is attached to the fly weight governor inside the engine. The fly weight is turned by the cam gear in most cases and the force that it produces is constantly trying to close the throttle. The governor spring provides the counter force to open the throttle. Without the governor, the engine can over rev. Good luck with your project.

High voltage rpm power generator output

Not sure what you mean "high voltage rpm power generator out", however many people have asked how to adjust the engine for proper voltage output. On generators with~out a voltage regulator, I adjust the engine RPM by using a digital voltage meter that has a Hz setting. Adjust the governor untill the meter displays 60 Hz. With the geneator producing 60 cycles, I know that the engine is turning 3600 rpm (the engine produces max hp when it is turning 3600 rpm). At this point, read the voltage output to verify that the range is between 115 ~ 120. On generators with a voltage regulator, verify/adjust that generator is producing 60 cycles then adjust voltage by turning screw at the regulator (some regulators are sealed with potting compound and can not be adjusted). If your power demands are not that great and you appliance can operate at 50 cycles, adjust governor as needed. Lowering to 50 cycles will also reduce output voltage. Good luck

My yamaha 2400 gen.does not run smooth at idle, but under a load it runs fine.

I'm not quite sure if your issue may relate to most inverter and auto-load sensing generators or some gas-powered equipment.
Most power cutters/grinders such as Stihl or Husqvarna, specially the higher cc models do sound crappy without load, you'd think there's something wrong with it from day 1. This is normal. Well, some of these machines lack the load sensing capability thus does not adjust throttle variably according to load.
Modern generators, specially the inverter ones along the 1000 to 3000 watt range where the Yamaha 2400 falls into category, have a switch where you can choose to let the unit sense and adjust throttle according to load. If this is off, the unit might sound like its not running smoothly on idle. Depending on you, this can be alarming or not. On a Honda EU2000is, for example, it is noticeable when the auto-load sensing button is off but not be like its choking or sputtering.
Anyhow if it is idling roughly, I can only come up with 2 possible causes, if I may suggest:
1.) the cable that gradually pulls the throttle (to open wide or close) on the carburetor - normally called governor cable (although it has different configurations on different engine types) needs to be adjusted/tightened. Or replaced, if worn out. Before new cable, put lithium grease on cable - it helps a lot.
2.) throttle adjustment might be necessary. At most Yamaha servicing dealers, it is included when you have a carburetor tune-up. They will check the diaphragm for blockage or holes, gaskets for leaks and filters, well, the entire integrity of your carburetor. This resolves most rough idling issues.
I know it would probably save you at least $65.00 if you have to check this yourself and buy the spare parts. However, going to a servicing dealer may be the best solution but always be sure the repairs are warratied. Hope this helps.

Generator runs great but doesn't produce any power

There is a electronic module that senses load current that pulls the throttle up for high RPM. Fine the module and look it over, you may need to replace it.

I have a honda engine gx620 coupled with my generator and in tern connected through a power center to charge batteries and sync with my inverter. It's showing only 60hz dropping to 59hz and I need to know...

You did not mention how many amps your system is producing/drawing, however I don't think that you need to adjust the governor. Your engine can produce 18 hp at 3600 rpm. At 3600 rpm your generator is producing 60hz or cycles. As the load increases /decreases it has an effect on the governor thus the change in cycles. If the load increases past the capacity of the engine, the cycles will drop. To stabilize, reduce the load. 59hz is produced when the engine is turning about 3550 rpm. If you increase the speed of the engine to compensate cycles may increase past 60hz. 3650rpm will probably produce 61hz. Engine speed could be fluctuating due to other reasons (vacuum leak, dirty air filter, plug, etc ) if there is only a small load on the engine/generator. If you would still like to adjust the governor please email the load on the generator and I will help with instructions. Good Luck with your generator it is a very nice unit and built to last.

Honda generator em 1800

Honda generators are very reliable and are easy to adjust. The best way to check for proper output is to use a meter that can check cycles and voltage. Set meter to htz or freq and adjust the engine governor to 60 cycles. When the engine is turning 3600 rpm it is at max power and the generator may be producing ac voltage ranging from 115 to 125 at 60 cycles. When you draw power from the generator the engine governor will try to overcome the stress and maintain 3600 rpm. The engine must be well maintained to produce full power. Service oil, filter, plug and valve adjustment. Some engines have a spark arrester installed in the muffler that may become blocked with carbon. If engine is producing full power and voltage/amps is low then check brushes, capacitors, and/ or voltage regulator. Most problems occur when too much power is requested from rated generator. Example, trying to connect an 1800 watt air compressor to generator. The compressor may draw double the stated wattage upon starting and cycling. For longest generator life, It is best to use only 75% of rated output. On an 1800 watt generator use max wattage 1350. If you actually need to use 1800 watts then the best generator would be a 2500 watt. enjoy
