Special function keys esc-F8 will not respond to the FN+ task... they will however work assigned regular function...(eg F5 will refresh page just fine) Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504 PC Notebook I have tried every thing I can imagine to do short of giving the lappy flying lessons out the door!
Ok thanks but I dont know how to even get into the bios to start... and second I can hit the fn + f11 and that turns on my 10key number pad so I assume the fn key is not disabled it is just the controls that go along with the fn key that I cant seem to get to work eg...esc= mute or f6 f7 brightness up and down or f1=lock, none of these work

The Fn key is a key found usually on the keyboards of portable computers (laptops, netbooks etc) and sometimes on desktop type keyboards.
It is a key usually marked with a blue coloured "Fn" and is located somewhere on the bottom left row of keys.
The Fn key is used in combination with other keys that have (usually) blue letters or icons on them to activate the special functions (Fn) on these keys.
For example, on the laptop I'm writing this on; If I press F5 the computer would perform the action my software has normally assigned to F5. If however I press the Fn button and F5, the computers internal function for decreasing screen brightness is invoked.
Different computer makes have different assignment to their keyboard Fn so you can't generally say press Fn+F5 to decrease screen brightness, it might be assigned to something else, volume or sleep-mode or even nothing. The "blue" text or icon will give an indication of what it will do.
go into the BIOS settings and tell it to use the LCD/Monitor as a display.
or
press fn key+(F5 or F7 or F8) 1x or 2x or 3x.....
Fn key combination. The Fn key is located
at the lower left of the keyboard, normally between the CTRL and the ALT
key. Toshiba uses Fn-F5 to toggle between the laptop LCD and an external
display. IBM or Lenovo uses FN-F7, Acer varies with the model, using Fn-F5,
Fn-F3, Fn-F8, Sony Fn-F7, Dell Fn-F8, HP or Compaq, Fn-F4. There are variations
with the age of the laptop and not all manufacturers have standardized on
a key combo across the whole range, but you can usually figure it out from
the little graphics on the function keys that line the top of the keyboard.
Hi there,
You need to press hold the FN key and press the F4 function key once which toggles the display to the External Display source like the television connected along with the LCD of the Notebook.
If the FN and F4 key combination is pressed again, the display will dissappear from the LCD of the Notebook and remain only on the external source.
If the FN and F4 key combination is pressed third time, the display will be back on the LCD of the Notebook and will not remain on the External display source.
Here are these details in other way :
First time pressing FN + F4 ---> Display on LCD and External display
Second time pressing FN + F4 ---> Display not on LCD but on the External Display
Third time pressing FN + F4 ---> Display back on the LCD and not available on External Display (Normal position).
