GE Profile side by side fridge - water dispenser doesn't work

This is an 8 yr old fridge, the ice maker works and dispenses ice in the door (in door dispenser for water, ice cubes and crushed ice), but when switched to water nothing comes out. I've removed and reinstalled the filter, about 1/4 oz of water drips out then nothing again. Same thing happens each time I take the filter out and put it back.

can get ice but no water out of dispenser

  • willyvv Nov 20, 2008

I checked the line at the bottom of the soor...no water. I guess that means the valve in the back. Does anyone have an idea how difficult that might be or how to do it?

  • Anonymous Nov 22, 2008

Same problem bt I also smell a "hot electrical" odor when I try to dispense water

  • DallasLady Jan 23, 2009

I HAD (past tense) the same problem and wish that I had checked out this website and ravenmanic's posted solution yesterday. After a $92 service call, the GE tech said "sorry, can't fix" and quoted the cost of a new door + labor at $918.!!!! My GE Profile is only 6 years old. I called consumer services and they reduced the part price so door + labor would be about $450. Ridiculous. You can be sure I am writing to GE today!!!!

Thanks ravenmanic--15 minutes with the door open and water flowed!!!!

More than likely, your water line is freezing up in the door. You can remove all of the ice cubes and lower the freezer temp to about 3. Leave the freezer door open for about 5 minutes or so and if this does not work, leave the door open a little longer. Also, disconnect the water line at the base of the freezer door, near the floor, and press the dispenser lever. If you have water there, you most likely have a frozen line in the door. Changing the water filter often will help but it is not the answer and is can get quite expensive. By the way, Make sure to hold the dispenser lever forward for at least a couple of minutes each time you test for water flow. If you do not get water at the connector at the base of the door after you have disconnected the line, you have a problem with the valve in the back of the refrigerator.

I had this same problem and discovered that the cold level for the freezer had been raised to 9 and the refrigerator also. Lowered both to 5 and 36 hours later the water started working. Glad I did that before tearing everything up.

This is a common problem with GE refrigerators. After a few years of use (5 for me) the water line starts to freeze in the freezer door. Fortunately, there is a simple and inexpensive solution as GE released a water line heater. I noticed a ton of people with the same issue so I posted a blog entry about it at bustedrefrigerator.com. This has the symptoms, best places to order the parts and detailed instructions on the fix.

I have the same problem.  It started to happen after I changes the water filter, so  I was wondering if I had a bad filter at first.   So far I have left the freezer door open for about thirty minutes.  I have also dumped the ice bin and cleaned that out, in addition to raising the freezer temperature.  I do have water coming out, but it is not with a full force.  I am leaving it open for five more minutes and trying it again.  I am then going to let it sit for a while and see what happens.      FYI  about 2 years ago I had to have the control panel replaced on this fridge for the ice maker and the dispenser in general.  My fridge was at the most 3 years old at that point.  I don't remember the cost but it wasn't cheap. the  repair man mentioned that the new design of kitchens with the fridge being closed in has been causing problems for this particular model. I am not going to get the same fridge again, especially if I can't get the dispenser to work for the water for sure.  I will keep you posted on my progress.

We just took the ice tray out of the ge fridge and moved all of the frozen foods from the door to the freezer interior compartment.

Hoping the 30 minute thaw worx.

  • Anonymous May 08, 2012

Okayee...30 minutes later...the line has thawed and the water is dispensing from the door.

  • Anonymous May 08, 2012

Don't forget to turn your freezer setting down to zero. And leave that door open.

I followed the suggestion to trace the "active" line of water, which I did to the back of the refrigerator. The water line in connected to a power device -- one side red, the other blue. The red side, looked normal, but the blue side appeared to be disconnected, or at least one side did not look plugged in. I pushed the "U" shaped plug into the two receivers behind where the water line came in and voila, water. Hope this helps someone. Please be careful, because you are dealing with the water line AND electricity!

Water dispenser was not working...simply emptied the ice bin of all ice cubes but 1/4...then water started working almost immediately. Apparently had way too much ice in the bin which had frozen the water line.

SOURCE: Ice dispenser only dispenses crushed ice

THE WAY A DISPENSER CHANGES FROM CUBES TO CRUSHED ICE IS BY RAISING AN ARM THAT RUNS ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE ICE BIN. IF IT SETS FOR A LONG TIME, IT CAN GET A BUILUP OF FROST OR ICE THAT KEEPS IT FROM MOVING. PULL THE ICE BIN OUT AND TRY TWISTING THE END OF THE ARM MANUALLY. IT SHOULD OPEN A DOOR AT THE FRONT OF THE BIN THAT WOULD ALLOW THE ICE TO BYPASS THE CUTTER ASSEMBLY.
ALSO,WITH THE ICE BIN REMOVED, PUSH THE DOOR SWITCH BUTTON CLOSED BUT KEEP THE FREEZER DOOR OPEN. WHERE THAT ARM GOES IN THROUGH THE BACK WALL, CHECK FOR MOVEMENT OF A ROD UPWARD WHEN YOU CALL FOR CUBED ICE. IF YOU HEAR A LOUD HUM BUT THE ROD DOESN'T MOVE, YOU MAY NEED TO REPLACE THE SOLENOID ASSEMBLY IN THAT MODULE.

SOURCE: Ice maker only dispenses crushed ice, won't dispense cubed ice anymore.

I have a GE TFX25ppbaaa refrigerator. The ice maker corkscrew motor would run and provide crushed ice only. The corkscrew motor would not run when the switch was moved to the cubed ice ( half moon) setting.

I replaced the large Light/ water/ crushed ice/cubed ice switch , ( product service number GEH WR55X129 ) ( part number GE 162D6372 PO17 )and it fixed the problem. Cost was about $43.00.

SOURCE: Ice Maker GSI-26 dispenses crushed ice and will not dispense cube

You have a solenoid switch which switches the dispenser back and forth from crushed to cube. It could be stuck or not working or the parts connecting it could be disconnected or broken. You will have to observe to see if any parts are moving and if any noise is coming from the solenoid

LG refrigerator won't dispense water any more

The water line is freezing in the door due to deteriorated insulation. The only fix I have found to work on my fridge was to defrost the inside door with a blow dryer. Then place a weedeater replacement line (the orange 10" or so size you find at Lowes' or Home Depot) up through the dispenser nozzle, If the line only travels about 3-4 inches up the nozzle, then ice is still in the tube. Blow dry it until you are able to get water to dispense. After the tube is ice-free, place the weedeater line up throuth the dispenser nozzle leaving about 1/8" sticking out. The dispenser will still work with the line stuck in it. The dispenser will probably freeze again in about 8 hours, But all you need to do each time this happens is to pull the weedeater line out, dispense the water to unclog the ice, and place the weedeater line back in the nozzle. I have been using this method for about a week now and it works great. My GE Side-by-side is also 4 years old and this seems to be a problem with all of them. There is a part you can order to fix the problem, but I have heard it may not work.

Ice maker works but water won't dispense

There is a know defect with the freezer side door. read more at http://www.houstongofarappliancerepair.com/Refrigerator.html

Also, If you call and haggle GE they may send you a new freeezer side door. Or, You may actually try turning fridge off, leaving door open for about 4 hours and then try it again. As strange as this sounds it has worked for some of my customers.... When "air-bubbles" get into that line it can freezer inside the door a small section of water line because the insulation in freezer side door isn;t thick enough... More can be read on this problem at http://www.houstongofarappliancerepair.com/Refrigerator.html
