Microwave Keypad not working

My LMVM1935Sb is plugged in, there is a light in the microwave when you open the door. Screen shows the correct time. However the keypad, the Light and the Vent Fan button are non-responsive. Is this a bad circuit board or possibly a fuse? (I tried the parental lock trick and that did not work.)

Holy Cow! My wife said she was cleaning the microwave right before it stopped working. As an update the Light/Fan button has come back (working) but nothing else. How difficult is it to replace these keypads and can I do it on my own (where would I get one), or should I have a professional come and do it?
Again top notch response, thank you very much.

Mine is actually the LMVM2075ST which I bought in 2007.  Exact same issue. Called LG which said I had to repair myself.  Did anyone have any luck with the company support.  It is ridiculous how much I paid for this faulty product.  I thought LG was a good brand.

This model does have a child lock. If it's on, the display will say "LOCKED". It is turned on and off by holding dfown the "0" key for 4-5 seconds. You may also have a bad keypad, which in many cases can be replaced. A bad keypad may be worn out due to age, damaged, or it may have gotten wet or otherwise contaminated. Moisture and contamination can be caused by spraying of cleaners, by storing the microwave in an unheated garage or shed, or infestation. I warn my customers to never spray cleaner directly onto the microwave keypad, since the liquid can get inside and "lock up" or even ruin the keypad or controller. Apply an alcohol-based cleaner (such as the purple kind) to a cloth (paper towels can scratch) and gently wipe it off. I suggest to my customers that they NEVER use any ammonia-based cleaner (like the blue stuff) on a microwave, since the ammonia will crack and distort polycarbonate plastics. Repost if you need more help.

You can call LG / Goldstar at 1-800-243-0000 (select option 2) to order parts. You might also ask them if they have parts distributors or if you have to order direct from them.

They may call the part a keypad, membrane keypad, membrane switch, etc. It may come separate or with the control panel frame. That second way is easier to swap, but costs more.

BUT - Make sure they don't try to just steer you to a local repair shop before they are clear that you want to buy "repair parts" yourself.

Otherwise, you can try calling a couple of local appliance parts companies in your Yellow Pages.

If they sell just the membrane keypad / membrane switch, then you can essentially peel off the old one and stick a new one on.

You do have to take the oven apart, and you need to observe a few precautions. You can find my crititcal safety info file by doing search on Yahoo.com (not Google) for:

    microwave safety.txt

If you decide call a local shop to do the work, I would recommend one that is "authorized to work on LG microwaves under warranty". Ask them just that when you call. They're more likely to have the repair manual and hotline access to get parts quickly.

    Good luck.

    Two other things!!!

Sometimes (not often) you can get lucky and find that there is still some moisture on the circuit board and that the keypad is not bad.

Then you can carefully blow out the moisture with an air compressor or maybe use a heat source to dry it out.

Also, some residue can remain inside the keypad connector. Here's an excerpt from my help file on that subject:

If certain keys are not working, there may be some foreign substance at the point where the green or blue plastic strip from the keypad plugs into the circuit board. To check that:

    1. Be sure the oven is disconnected from the power line while you are taking it apart.

    2. The keypad connection is the green or blue translucent plastic strip that plugs into a connector near the edge of the board.

    3. There are two tiny tabs (one on each side) of the connector that you can gently pull up on to unlock the connector.

    4. Then the keypad strip will lift out. Clean both sides of the end of the strip with alcohol-based cleaner if you like, but do not use ammonia-based cleaner. Dry the end of the strip.

    5. Put the keypad strip back in, making sure both sides are down fully.

    6. While holding the strip down, push the connector back down to lock it.

    7. Try the keys again with the door closed.

Heat the keypad with a hair dryer. The problem is generally moisture. After a minute or two or three of heat, the keypad works. Did so on a Sharp, Panasonic and Black & Decker.

Keypad quit working on similar LG model. Buy replacement keypad for $30 at repairclinic.com. Turn off power, remove two screws on top. Take top cover off. Remove control panel on right via two screws (it folds down on two plastic tabs at bottom. Remove two wires, wire harness (has clip on back) and remove control panel. Keypad ribbon is removed from circuit board by pulling up on sides of black connector. That slips up lock on ribbon allowing ribbon to be removed. Keypad is stuck to face with sticky stuff so remove at face by peeling off corners and pulling loose. Replace is opposite of installation.

SOURCE: No key's work. Display and inside light is working

The Keypad is either faulty, or disconnected. Open the case, and remove the screws, holding the outer shell on. Inside, there should be a small board that covers the Keypad. Check to see if there is a ribbon cable, or some other type of connection going from the board to another part of the microwave. If all of the wires are connected, then you will probably need to replace the keypad.

GE Microwave (Over the Range: Model HVM1540DPBB) was stopping operation. It would beep, and the display would show garbage. I would unplug it, then plug it into the outlet, then it would display "keypad...

make this test and fix it. God bless you

  1. Inspect the power cordUnplug the power cord and check for voltage at the outlet. Also inspect for damage, shorts, or burn marks that can be a possible safety hazard.
  2. Bad door switchIf your microwave does not work at all and you know everything is plugged in properly and the outlet is functioning, then also check the door hooks and the door release button. Using a volt-ohm meter on RX1, check your terminals. When your microwave door is closed you should have a reading of zero. Once the door is open the reading should change to infinity. If these readings do not match up, replacement of the door switch is necessary.
  3. Blown fusesTo determine if your fuse has blown out, which may attribute to your microwave not running, you need to pull the fuse out using a pair of fuse pullers. Lay it down and using a volt-ohm meter on RX1, check both ends of the fuse in question. If you do not get a reading of zero, then you will need to replace the fuse.
  4. Bad fan motorLocate the fan and remove the leads. Again using the volt-ohm meter on RX1, check the terminals. If an infinity reading is displayed, it means that the fan has gone bad and requires replacement.

My microwave GE model # JVM1440WH04 spacemaker has no heat coming out of it. My husband heated microwave lasagna in it last, everything works except for the heat, any solutions?

Push the microwave door tightly closed. The computer will not start cooking until the door is closed for safety reasons. Some models of microwave will give a warning on the screen if the door is open.
2

Ensure you have programmed a heat setting, entered a cooking time and pressed the "Start" button on the microwave's keypad. Check that the microwave is not set to "Defrost" mode.
3

Unplug the microwave and wait for one minute. This measure will reset the microwave's internal computer if it has frozen or scrambled. Plug the microwave back in and try again.
4

Ensure the keypad lock mode is inactive. Most microwave ovens have a lockout feature that prevents children from starting the microwave while unsupervised. Lockout mode is usually deactivated by holding down the button that bears a padlock symbol
