My steering wheel turns only left and the key won't turn. I have to continue to mess with it...this has happened 3 x already and this time around it won't budge.
Okay, I just had this same problem with my 2009 Kia Rio and I did this. So not to down everyone's post on here -- everyone is correct -- by turning the steering wheel back and forth and turning the ignition key at the same time is a correct method. However, after talking to a Kia Serviceman, he told me you have to do it hard -- meaning turning it violently back and forth hard (madman style). In order to do this operation, I had my wife sit in the driver side and turn the key while I was on her left side grabbing the steering wheel and violent moving it back and forth like a madman, and after about 2mins of doing it the key turned over -- problem fixed. Do not worry about breaking anything; turning the steering wheel violently hard is a must -- this was told to me by a Kia service Rep. Remember -- have someone assist you; either turning the key or violently turning the steering wheel back and forth. Hope this works for you!!!!!

Could be a problem with the key lock itself or the steering wheel locking mechanism. Hard to determine without disassembling the steering collumn.

lift the vehichle to check for wheel bearing play apply pressure to the top and bottom of the tire in a rocking motion. any movement indicates bad wheel bearings or ball joints. watch for where the movement is

SOURCE: Kia Rio Wheel Bearing ( replaced mulitple times )
i myself went through a process close to this with my 2003 Kia Rio. The bearing on my rear drivers side welded itself to the spindle. meaning everything except my brake assembly and the drumb had to be replaced. after getting a new spindle and bearings grease and oil seals i put it back togother. two days later i started to have the problem again. the thing is you cant tighten the lock nut too much its something an experianced wheele worker has to do its all about how it feels when you tighten it, everything still needs to have room to move like the bearings for example, if the lock nut is to tight they wont spin youll end up losing alot more than just bearings again if its put togother wrong. 2nd when you work with bearings when you do one side you do the other, dont want to replace half a set of moving parts, and chances are if one bearing is going out the other one will follow closely. 3rd make sure you have enough grease in there, not enough will resault in friction and heat. remember everything needs room to move good luck
