The dictaphone indicates it is at the end of the tape and will not record or play when it is not at the end of the tape. It indicates this at all times no matter where on the tape you are at.
Does the tape play OK in another unit? Will the machine in question play ANY other tape OK? Depending on these answers, the trouble could be a bad tape or the machine in question may have a broken drive belt or a miss adjusted sensor, or a Erasure tab broken.
Check the unit in question without a tape in it & see if the "Spindle" to the right for a standard Cassette machine (the left spindle for a "Micro cassette" unit) turns when the unit is put in PLAY mode. If the spindle turns OK, if you can, see if you can easily "Stall" the spindle or not with your fingures. If the spindle turns between your fingers & is not easy to "Stall out" it is probably OK & it is possibly a bad tape.
There is also a "Sensor" for the tape while in "Record" in the back corner of the tape. If this tab is broken or missing in the tape, it will NOT record, it will only play. This tab is designed to be broken out for "Erasure prevention" when the media needs to be protected from erasure in a machine.
NOTE: these machines were designed to ONLY handle tape with a single side record time of 60 mins or less.
Good luck!
The sensor that detects the tape movement is bad and will need to be replaced.

Thank you. Do you know where I can get the sensor?
