How can I allow incoming faxes through this phone?

I need to be able to allow incoming faxes thru this same phone line. Does this model require the caller to immediately hit their "send" button once their hear my outgoing message, or do they hit "send" after the beep (as if they were going to leave me a voice message)? Please let me know. Thanks so much!

Will not receive incoming fax. Everything tests OK

First, Connect the Phone line in Line 1 EXT at back of printer

Check the No. of Rings on your Answer machine.
If you have 4 Rings set on Answer machine then you need to set 6 Rings on the printer ( as simple 2 rings more than your Answer machine )
And you need to turn off ECM on the Printer setup

Press Setup button
Scroll till you find Fax Settings - Press OK
Choose Rings to Answer - Set it - 6 ( based on the Rings on Answer machine ) - Press OK
Check for ECM - Error Correction Mode - Press OK
Turn it OFF - Press OK
Check for Auto Answer option - Turn it ON too.

Try to receive Fax.. it should come thru.

What is answer mode?

The answer mode determines whether the HP Fax answers incoming calls or not.

Different answer modes are :

* Fax

The HP Fax will automatically answer all incoming calls using the Rings to Answer setting. This is the default setting.

* FaxTel (unit with handset model only)

The HP Fax automatically answers all incoming calls using the Rings to Answer setting. If the call is a fax call, the HP Fax will receive the fax. If the call is a voice call, the HP Fax will create a special ring to indicate it is a voice call. The incoming voice call will need to be answered using the attached handset.

NOTE: If the HP Fax determines the call is a voice call, only the HP Fax will ring with the special ring tone. The other phones on the same phone line will not ring at all. You will not be able to pick up the voice call using the other phones.

* Tel

The HP Fax will not automatically answer calls. Faxes will need to be received manually.

* AnswerMachine

The HP Fax will monitor the line when an incoming call is answered by a person or by the answering machine. If the HP Fax detects fax tones on the line, it will receive the fax.

How do i set up fax to automaticely receive faxes after several rings

For a phone line dedicated only to the fax machine, the process is as follows:
  1. Press Menu/Set, 0, 1.
  2. You will see the Fax Receive window
  3. Use UP and DOWN arrows to change the setting to FAX ONLY
  4. Press Menu/Set.
  5. Press STOP/EXIT
Your fax machine will now answer every incoming call.
If the fax machine is sharing the phone line with a telephone, repeat the above steps and change from FAX ONLY to FAX/TEL This option will allow you to share the line with a phone only, not an answering machine. Once in FAX/TEL mode, the fax machine will still grab every incoming FAX call, and give a special ring (slightly different than a regular telephone ring) when it's a regular incoming phone call signaling you to answer the phone. I hope this helps with your problem. Best of luck!

Lexmark X6170 Has a shared phone/fax line with different numbers

Open the Lexmark "Fax Printer Setup Utility". Click on the "Connection/Dialing" tab. In the "Interact with Phone Line" section, "Answer Incoming Calls:" should be set to "If fax tones are detected".

If this is turning out to be too unreliable for you, you will need to either manually receive incoming faxes (by changing the setting to "Manual"), or you will need to at least spring for a separate phone number with a distinctive ring for incoming faxes.

I have just purchased a printer scanner copier and fax from argos where do i get my fax number from please?

Your fax number is the phone number of the line going into the fax machine.
Or do you want to input the phone number into the machine? In which case I would need to know the make and model number of the machine. But if its just the Fax Number, it is the Phone number of the incomming phone line.

Electra professional nec

I am making the assumption that only line 1 has caller-ID. Both of my suggestions require services on the phone lines themselves, and not thru the phone system.
  1. Line 1 needs features on the line to allow three-way calling. Then you would hit the Recall key after answering to send a Flash to the Central Office to dial the 2nd number. This takes the transfer away from the phone system and puts it on the CO. This requires more time and effort on the staff answering phones, and if a calls comes in while this is in progress, it's going to roll over to another number in the hunt sequence anyway.
  2. Get Caller-ID on all lines.

Receiving a fax

Faxes fail intermittently or with only one fax number
  • If static is present on the phone line, fax communication may fail. Have the phone line checked and serviced by the telephone company (or have the other party check their line). Phone line quality is the most common reason for intermittent fax failures. Some older locations and buildings have inadequate phone system wiring.
  • If you are trying to send a color fax and it fails, try sending the same machine a black and white fax. Normally the fax will detect that the other fax is not color capable and will offer you the option to send the fax as black and white but this might not always be the case. Do not send color faxes unless you know the other fax machine is capable of receiving color faxes.
  • Check the phone cable from the wall jack to the fax. It should not be coiled or longer than necessary. Coiling the cable can cause cross talk or echo on the line. Signal strength and quality can be lost with long cables.
  • Make sure the phone cable routing (and any cables not plugged into the same jack but sharing the same line) is not near any electrical appliances (electric motors, fans, kitchen appliances, or televisions). Many of these devices do not have sufficient electrical shielding and can induce electro-magnetic force (EMF) onto the phone line. Computers are usually shielded sufficiently and do not cause this problem.
  • Do not use a call-waiting service on the same line connected to the fax machine. The click sound caused by an incoming call can cause the fax to fail.
  • You can block certain faxes on some models. Verify that the telephone number of the sending fax is not blocked in the faxing software. This is usually located in the Fax History.
