I have changed needle and rethreaded several times, the machine creates a good chain without fabric but will not serge once fabric is placed in.

Make sure the chain stitch thread is threaded exactly as it should be, make doubly sure the thread comes off the bobbin vertically and runs through all eyes smoothly. Any faults in the threading causes extra tension at the needle despite what the tension is set on.
If this is not the cause then the needle depth and the looper timing needs checking.

It sounds as though you have a timing problem. The lower looper is not catching the needle thread. You might try lowering the needle about 1/16 inch to see if the looper will catch the thread. If that works, you can put the needle back and adjust the needle bar. If it doesn't, then you need to take it to a technician.

Are you sure the tension is right? You might need to push the thread hard against the track after leaving spool going into the machine (until it clicks). I had that problem also. Hope that helps.

The loopers must be threaded before the needles.
Make sure that the needles are not threaded. Thread the loopers and have the loose ends behind the presser foot. Then re-thread the needles and place a scrap of fabric under the foot and sew. Make sure that the edge of the fabric is not to the right of the plate, but where it would be if the knife had cut it.

Wow, this is great, there is actually life out there. Took the serger to the expensive repair man so it should get fixed. Will give you an update later , , ,
Is it possible to learn how to service this machine myself? Can't seem to find any good resources to help. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to learn this? Really the price tag to get it "serviced" is ridiculous.
