White serger chains but does not work on fabric

I have changed needle and rethreaded several times, the machine creates a good chain without fabric but will not serge once fabric is placed in.

Wow, this is great, there is actually life out there. Took the serger to the expensive repair man so it should get fixed. Will give you an update later , , ,

Is it possible to learn how to service this machine myself? Can't seem to find any good resources to help. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to learn this? Really the price tag to get it "serviced" is ridiculous.

Make sure the chain stitch thread is threaded exactly as it should be, make doubly sure the thread comes off the bobbin vertically and runs through all eyes smoothly. Any faults in the threading causes extra tension at the needle despite what the tension is set on.
If this is not the cause then the needle depth and the looper timing needs checking.

SOURCE: The serger is not sewing

It sounds as though you have a timing problem. The lower looper is not catching the needle thread. You might try lowering the needle about 1/16 inch to see if the looper will catch the thread. If that works, you can put the needle back and adjust the needle bar. If it doesn't, then you need to take it to a technician.

Are you sure the tension is right? You might need to push the thread hard against the track after leaving spool going into the machine (until it clicks). I had that problem also. Hope that helps.

SOURCE: My brand new Kenmore serger

The loopers must be threaded before the needles.

Make sure that the needles are not threaded. Thread the loopers and have the loose ends behind the presser foot. Then re-thread the needles and place a scrap of fabric under the foot and sew. Make sure that the edge of the fabric is not to the right of the plate, but where it would be if the knife had cut it.

My machine will chain without fabric but as soon as I place fabric and sew it will not make stitches on fabric

Be sure to use brand new needles in the machine (confirm they are the correct needles for the machine) and make sure they are installed facing the correct direction and pushed all the way up before tightened. Start a chain without the fabric, then when it's a couple inches long, raise the presser foot and add the fabric.

Could be your machine has a timing issue and probably requires service.

I have re-threaded, changed needles, adjusted the differential and cutting width but cannot sew a single seam without the stitches skipping, sometimes several in a row and sometimes only one.

SKIPPED STITCHES ON A SERGER

1. Is the needle bent or worn--replace

2. Is the needle inserted correctly into the needle holder--check needle

3. Is the Serger threaded correctly--rethread

4. Is the presser foot pressure right for the fabric--adjust
5. are the needles the correct ones for the serger
6. Possible timing problem--need to be checked at a sewing machine shop

Elna serger is not creating chain stitch

Rethread! Your lose looper has a "hidden" eye all the way to the left. You will find task easy with serger looper tweezers and serger looper Threader; however, if you turn hand wheel to the left, the lower looper will slide in that direction. Now you will see that "hidden" hole now. It takes practice, but you can still thread it without the extra tools! Hope this helps and if it does, I will get point for if you give me rating since I offer my time free to help others. Jimmy

Serger won't chain off a stitch. Stitches won't chain and hold to fabric. Added new needle, rethreaded whole machine. Stitches won't connect to fabric or make a chain.

is it possible that the needles are in backwards?
it's very possible that the machine is out of time & would have to be taken to a sewing machine repair shop to be retimed

I have a elna 686 serger an it sounds perfect and acts like its sewing but there is no thread staying on the material.... I have tryed to rethread it several times and it does not help at all. What could...

There is several things to check:

Is the needle thread actually going through the needle eye?
Is it chaining off without fabric under the foot? If not, then you need to revisit your threading up, there is a specific sequence that you need to thread the loopers then needles, then pull the threads under the foot, lower pressure foot and press the foot control to make a few stitches, a chain of thread should form.

If this is not happening and you have threaded it up in the right sequence, then check both needles are fitted correctly, fully up into the housing and flat shank to the back. On most sergers the two needles sit at different heights in order to form the stitches. If you haven't done it for a while, change the needles.

If you still can't get a chain of stitching then it is possible that the timing between the loopers and needles has gone out and it will need to be serviced by a technician to get this back right.

Husqvarna 910 won't create a chain.

You may have knocked the machine out of time if the machine does not pick up stitches.
