Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder that won't recognise any discs

I also have a Panasonic DMR-EH55 that will not recognise any discs, including commercial DVDs. I first noticed the problem trying to burn a DVD-R disc with a movie I had recorded to the Harddrive, I have done this many times before with no problem. After that I couldn't even view a rental!!! The message I get with any DVD is "Cannot read. Please check the disc." I have tried numerous discs. It also makes a clunking noise when it spins up.

I have the exact problem with Panasonic Model ES35V. It worke dfine until I tried to copy my VHS tape to a DVD Ram and now it will not play any DVD's including commercial type. It worked fine until yesterday. Only 1 1/2 years old. This is my second one....my advice...do not buy Panasonic. It was $298 and I bought it for the purpose of recording, and have never even used it for that. The first one I bought malfunctioned in 30 days and had to be replaced. Piece of junk!!

SOURCE: DMR E55-P will not read DVD-R

Hi Benyto

Thank you for the information. Sorry that you are having such problems.

Nearly all the problems on ths DMR E55 are due to a faulty power board. The greatest load on the power supply is when the unit first reads discs and also when finalizing. Sometimes the unit cannot read discs and sometimes it continuously self checks.

Try replacing IC001 on the power board. This is a 5 pin regulator #STRG6353. This component gets very hot and the heatsink is poor. When I replace these, I use a larger heatsink and some heatsink paste which helps to prolong the life of the component. If you look at the regulator, you will see by the colour of the circuit board that it gets very hot. It fails after two or three years in all DMR E55s.

Be careful when you take the old regulator out because the print can lift away from the circuit board.

I have posted full instructions on how to replace the STRG6353 >HERE<

Hope this helps

SOURCE: DMR-EH55 HDD ERROR

Likely a drive by question, but the answer is likely related to a dead drive. If unformattable, then replace the HDD with off-the-shelf replacement

SOURCE: Panasonic DMR-EH55 Ram Drive Problem

Do you mean you want to replace the hard drive in the unit? If so, I have one of these units and I installed a new PATA hard drive and then "prepared" it with a firmware update that is available from Panasonic's website. I tried to increase the capacity by installing a 500GB hard drive, and also a 300GB hard drive, but no matter what size I put in, after I initialized the new hard drive with the firmware disc I always only had 92 hours available to me. In fact there was never anything wrong with my unit, I was only trying to increase the capacity for recording - which I was never able to do. I did find that another 200GB hard drive I tried didn't actually work for some unknown reason, but the 500GB, the original 200GB and a 300GB hard drive worked no problem every time I swapped them around. Let me know if you need the link to Panasonic's download - it's easy to find.

SOURCE: panasonic dmr-e55 won't work, just says "hold" on display

HOLD or X HOLD? If the latter - which is most likely - then the Child Lock has been activated! Press and hold ENTER and RETURN simultaneously until HOLD disappears!

My dmr-eh55s will no longer transfer from the hard drive to the DVD in the high speed mode. It will in low speed mode (real time).

It sounds like the DVD-RAM drive is about dead. Panasonic did not make them to be very durable.

Panasonic sells replacements at a high cost.

Replacement drives may work from used models including:
DMR-ES15
DMR-ES25
DMR-ES45
DMR-ES46

How can i make Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder use 16x dvd-r discs?

It is possible that one of the available software downloads (especially from the Canadian website) might allow you to use 16x -R disks, but your choice may be limited by the disk burner already fitted. Try the Panasonic site for info and updates.

Failure to accept DvD Ram discs in a Panasonic DMR-E55 Recorder

Possibilities are that the laser lens needs cleaning (use a proprietary cleaning disc) or that - as long as you are sure you have original manufacturers' discs and not fakes - the discs are scratched or dirty.

Will my non finalzied discs play on a panasonic ez 28 or ex 768

You will have no problem playing your non finalized discs on any of the Panasonic DMR range including the DMR EZ28 series. The DMR E55 can also easily be repaired if you can use a soldering iron and a little care. Please checkout my other postings for full repair details.
Cheers...

Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder Problem

I have been told that panasonic now have a faster speed disc on sale to suit the newer dvd recorders that dmr-e55 cannot record on as they are too fast. You have to buy the slower speed ram discs to suit the dmr-e55.
