I'm trying to print a page with black text only but because I'm out of the color it's telling me to replace it. I just put a new black cartilage in, can I not print unless I put in a new color cartilage.

I use a no. 4 pan head screw to drill a SMALL hole in the top of the ink cartridge, about 1/4" in back from the front edge, so you can reseal it with the screw when done.
Take a small syringe with a short needle and pull the plunger back.
Insert the needle into hole and hold cartridge in place, IN THE PRINT HEAD, while pushing the plunger down to "pressure feed" the ink into the print head.
Reseal the ink tank with the screw when done.
I think the problem stems from the new or refilled ink tank NOT making a good seal with the print head and then there is a vacuum leak at the joint.
I have done this many times with my various Canon printers with removable ink tanks and it almost invaribly works for me.
I also refil the ink tanks IN THE PRINTER rather than taking them out to help prevent the vacuum break between the print heand and the ink tank.
It also helps to use a photo printing program to "print" out a black, red, blue or yellow page (use whichever color you are having trouble with) to help start the ink flowing again as well.
It does not have to be a full 8 x 10 size, just something about 4 x 6 to help reestablish the ink flow.

I had the same problem, even when I only selected grayscale printing, my printer would use all 3 colors to make black, and my black cartridge would never get used. Try this:
On printing preferences change your Media Type to Transparency.
This should solve the problem and stop robbing your color tanks when you just want black

I have the same problem. I turned off the printer, then selected "auto head alignment from the printer's maintenance menu and it worked!
Menu -> Maintenance/Settings -> Maintenance -> Auto Head Align

Seems like Black cartridge is either empty or clogged. If you are sure that cartridge got ink in it then remove it and soak (surface only) of the head into hot water for about 15 seconds and test it by rubbing the head onto a cloth. If no ink comes out then try again.
good luck
