Problems recording DVD-R 16X

I have the SONY DVD RW DRU-710A, mi hardware is working fine, and I'm using Windows XP, and Nero 6 version 6.6.0.0. I've been burning DVD-R Verbatim 8x with no problems at all. Today (I live in Argentine) I tried to buy Verbatim DVDs for recording, and the seller told me there where receiving only Verbatim DVD-R 16x. I buy those, and the recorder doesn't recognize the blanks DVDs to burn them. Tried another DVD-R 16x "Imation" and the same thing come through... I've read that this DVD burner only burns DVD+R 16x. Is there any way to fix it (recording DVD-R 16x) by actalizing the firmware of the recorder? What can I do when the DVDs 8x doesn´t exist any more?

Try this download page to update your firmware from 25/10/05, so if you bought your writer before this date maybe this will work, otherwise buy 8x discs. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#710 The faster the discs are burned the more chance of errors there are, you should write at slower speeds for better quality.

When trying to record a home video VHS to DVD this is what I get. E-4 54040990 Cannot record on this disc. The disc is brand new.

Have you've tried cleaning the laser with a cleaning disc?

Failing this it may be worth removing the cover and cleaning the lens directly with a QTip and some lens cleaning fluid. Only use a drop and then wipe off with a clean dry QTip.

The other option is that you are using an incompatible format of blank DVDs. I've heard of people having problems using DVD-R & DVD-RW and although it is lised as being suitable for all types of recordable DVDs I belive you're best using DVD+R & DVD+RW.

The Manual states

Recordable disc

• We strongly recommend for good recording quality:

SONY DVD+RW 4x, MAXELL DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, SONY DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, TDK DVD+R 4x/8x/16x,

MAXELL DVD-RW 4x, MAXELL DVD-R 8x/16x

• Discs that have been tested and are proven to be compatible with this recorder:

VERBATIM DVD+RW 4x VERBATIM DVD+R 8x
VERBATIM DVD-RW x VERBATIM DVD-R 8x JVC DVD-RW 4x MAXELL DVD-R 16x

How to Install Sony DRU-710A DVD-RW

Hi there,

Cd/dvd drives don't actually require a driver to run. They use "class filter drivers" which are supplied by a burning program like Nero or NTI. These "class filter drivers" only add functionality to the drive. Windows just uses a generic driver "MSCDEX" to run them.

A couple of things to try:

Uninstall the drive. Open Device Manager, click on the + sign next to CD/DVD ROM drives, right click on the drive and select uninstall. Exit and restart your system. When windows loads, it will recognise a hardware change, and will ask if you want to install. Before you click anything, insert the disc that came with the drive (if you have one). This should then install, if not, let windows search. If windows can't find anything, select "I will choose the driver manually" and look for your drive in the list.

Another thing to do, is download the most current Chipset drivers for your motherboard (which I would recommend anyway, even if the above worked).

Update the Firmware version and the internal drivers for your drive. These can be found here: http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/112#drivers

Also, update windows to the latest Service Pack (SP3 for XP and SP1 for Vista) if you haven't got them already.

If you have Vista, did you recently update to SP1 via Windows Update? If the answer is yes, please let me know.

Hope these solve your problem

Tim

I have window xp my dvd burner worked fine before now it doesnt

What do you mean "it just stays there"? Can you be a bit more specific? The writing speed doesn't really mean anything apart from being able to burn quicker.

The "drivers" for the sony dru 710a can be downloaded from here:
http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/112#drivers

I would also update the Firmware version too.

Hope that works

Can not finalize disk (cd or dvd)

I just burned 6 movies, I noticed that when it goes to finalize, it ejects before finalization is complete. I use FAB Platinum 4.1. I'm going to go into the settings and use Nero burning rom before I remove my Sony and put in my other burner (Plextor) better then Sony I think. I used Nero before and it helped, maybe it will help this time. Why 3 movies did not play, and the others did is beyond me. Dan J
