However, Loud noises coming from a Whirlpool dryer are most oftencaused by loose objects inside the unit or by a broken dryer belt. The dryerbelt allows the dryer's motor to run smoothly. Continuous wear and dry conditionsmay cause the belt to dry out, eventually cracking and then snapping. This willcause a loud noise within the unit. Repair and fix the dryer belt of aWhirlpool dryer to get rid of loud noises.

1 Stop the Whirlpool dryer and look inside thedryer's drum for any loose objects such as coins, pens or anything else thatmay have been in a pocket of clothing. Remove the object and restart the dyerto determine if the noise has stopped.
2 Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet todisconnect all power to the unit.
3 Remove the lint trap from the lint compartment onthe top of the dryer.
4 Remove the screws that hold the top panel inplace. Pull the panel off to access the
dryer belt.
5 Tilt the dryer forward and lift the dryer drum toremove the belt. Check the dryer's belt. A belt that is worn, cracked, split orbroken will cause loud noises.
6 Slide the old belt off of the drum and pull it outto remove it. Take note on how it is positioned over the drum.
7 Install the new belt. Lean the front panel awayfrom the dryer and slip the new belt over the drum. Locate the position of theold belt and slip the new belt following the old belt's position ensuring thegrooved side of the belt faces down. Push the idler pulley towards the motor toallow you to slip and loop the belt around the motor pulley.
8 Place the top panel on the Whirlpool dryer andscrew it in place.
9 Open the dryer door and use your hand to rotatethe drum counterclockwise a few turns to ensure the belt is secured.
10 Plug the dryer into the wall unit and begin use.If the noise still exists, you'll want to call a professional repairtechnician.

that would be a broken belt, or the motor, I say belt. You will need to open the top of the dryer and look in the middle of the drum for a belt, which is not there I am sure, here are some websites,Tim:
I understand that you are having a problem with your dryer, you need a belt. Almost all dryers are belt driven so yes they are common items to a dryer. However, all belts for dryers are not the same size, shape or length. I would be glad to help assist you in your endeavor of replacing the belt if you can post a make and model of the dryer in question.
your drum belt is broken, your dryer had a belt safety switch and when belt breaks the power for the dryer is cut off. also your belt idler(the part that give tension to the belt) could be bad. take dryer apart and find out which of the components has fail.
Unplug the dryer and using a 1/2 inch pait scraper locate the spring loded clips holding the top down to the front of the cabnet. They are located about one to two inches from the front corners of the dryer.
Lift the top and rest it on the wall behind the dryer.
Looking inside the dryer locate the screws holding the front panel to the cabnet and remove the screws.
Mark the wires to the door switch and remove.
Remove the front panel.
Go behind the dryer and remove the small rear panel near the bottom of the dryer.Observe how the belt is attached to the pulleys.Release the tention on the belt by moving the belt tentioner and sliding the belt off the motor pulley.
Go to the front of the dryer and grab the belt on the top of the dryer drum. Holding the belt lift the drum straight out holding the drum with the belt.
Check to see if all the rollers are in good shape and rotate freeley. Oil if needed.
Check to see if the teflon gliders located on the front panel that hold the drum are in good shape. Replace if needed.
Vaccum the inside of the dryer.
Put the new belt over the drum and line the drum up and install back into the dryer.
Put the front panel back on and reinstall the two screws.
Replace the door switch wires.
Make sure the grooves on the belt are flat to the dryer drum
Put the top down and go behind the dryer'
Locate the belt.
Pinch the belt and insert it under the tention pulley and slide it over the motor pulley. Make sure the belt is positioned straight and located where the old belt was positioned on the drum.
motor running but drum not turning, good chance drum drive belt is broken or has jumped off drive pully.
UNPLUG POWER CORD TO DRYER.
open dryer and look for broken belt, if belt is broken use modle number from dryer to purchas the correct belt for dryer install belt and reasmbele dryer. reconect power and test dryer.
