It's very possible that the problem is that the shutter is stuck, which is a known Canon issue on the powershot cameras, mainly on the S2 and S3 models, which it happens after some time (weeks or months) thata camera is not used.

Unfortunately the repair of it requires a complete disassembly of the camera, including the lens, fix it, and then put back together everything.

Definitely requires the skills, tools and experience to do it, so it's recommended that a professional camera repair center is performing this type of repair.

If you look for a reliable and low cost repair service for it, you can look in ebay for such repair services.

Example, look for seller ID Great_items_2004 or with the keywords "Shutter black S3".

The screen is black but it will take a picture. What is the problem?

This sounds like you may have the screen deactivated. Try removing the battery and re-inserting then put camera back on and press the playback button. After switch to record mode and press the up arrows to see if the screen comes back on. If the screen still does not work but the camera still takes pictures and the pictures are actually exposing then the problem is with the lcd. You may need to replace the LCD. If the pictures are also coming out black then the problem is with the shutter inside of the lens unit. Both problems are repairable, but usually are done at Canon Service center. Photo Tech at www.phototech.com is the authorized service center for Canon. I have used them in the past and they are Canon trained.

Black LCD monitor on Powershot S410

that is not a malfunction, if the "display" button is pressed, the LCD turns off, (black), but if the mode switch is rotated to movie or panorama, it comes back on but will go black again if switched into the other 2 modes. when in one of the 2 modes that show black, simply press "display" and the LCD will come back on.

FYI "GURU", the CCD malfunction manifests as a purple colored screen with various levels of distortion, not black

Black LCD screen/ not 'seeing' picture. Canon EOS 400D camera

Hi

The Digital Rebel XTi doesn't have 'live view' mode, you can't see what you're taking a picture of before you take the picture.

Canon Powershot A70: LCD screen went blank - I can still access all menu functions (timer, resolution etc), but the screen is completely black otherwise. If i take a picture using the manual view finder,...

I had a A70 that would still take pictures, but the screen did not show a picture. I did some research and found that this is somewhat a common problems with some of the Canon Powershots to include the A70 where the LCD screens expire. I believe that if the camera gets too hot, such as being left in a vehicle the LCD seperates. I sent my camera to Canon and they fixed it for free. It took about 4-6 weeks to receive my camera back, and now it works perfectly. They did a great job on communicating with me, and fixing the issue. I think that alone is worth buying a Canon. The link below should help you.

Black LCD screen on canon powershot S5 IS

A stuck shutter is a common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see the following for further info and a simple fix that may help:

Black LCD and Viewfinder

I have the similar problem as above...Canon 5D

When camera is turned on the viewfinder is black. All other functions appear to be working correctly. I can view pictures on the card. I take a picture and it views on the screen and the spec's come up on the botton of the view finder but the viewfinder is 90 black with a bit of blur. Is this the censor or a mirror...?

Is this fixable and at what approximate cost? Would it be cheaper to replace?

LCD Screen does not work properly

Your camera works just like a film camera SLR,. You use the eyepiece to frame and focus your picture. The LCD screen is for reviewing pictures taken or menu operations. You cannot preview a shot on screen before it is taken with the camera.
