I have made sure the coil is in good shape and have replaced the rope but now it won't retract back into the unit
SOURCE: need to rewind craftsman chainsaw pull rope.
I have tried to do this many times and have yet to suceed, believe me it's not worth the fustration and the extra days in hell you will spend from cussing.
Take to a repair shop, they can do it quickly and cheaply when you consider how difficult this is for the ordinary person. (me)
SOURCE: poulan starter rope
to fix starter rope first you must wind spring and place back in housing. just grab spring by middle and wind ,you will have to get it smaller than housing hole. One end should hook to a tab at housing rest of it sets inside itself. once set in housing dont let go, insert rope housing over top & screw in. rope housing should have some return spring to it when pulled. if rope is not tight on return pull simply add one winding to spool. hope it helps!
SOURCE: recoil spring on homelite chain saw doesn't retract pull rope
Easy suggestion would be to get new spring coil. Is it older saw? Have had to change mine on poulan saws before.
New or used unit? If new can you return it ? If not you will need to take the recoil assembly off the engine and rewind the spring. Check inside the recoil assembly to see if the spring is broken or just popped out of place on either end. If it is broken your done. You will need to find a Poulan dealer to get a new spring. If new take it to a Poulan dealer for warrenty replacement. If you want to try to rewind the spring look to see where one end of the spring fits into the housing and the other into the spool. On the edge of the puley should be a notch. Place the rope in the notch and turn the pulley it in the direction needed to wind the spring about 4 or 5 turns. If it now pulls all the rope in you are done.If not put the rope back in the notch and wind the spring tighter till the rope is all pulled in.
