Yes you do have to take not one, but both sides off: First take off left and right pedals, a 14mm or 9 l16 end wrench will do the job. Then you will find specific holes where the screws that hold the side panels are I think they are # 15 or 20 torque ( star confiuration). This will expose the frame blow all the debris out. Last ,but not least you will locate the battery behind and below the alernator two phillips heads screw hold the 6v @ 2.5ah battery in place,then replace the the battery, and reassemble the unit. This sholud not take more than 30 min to do.

That component is a capacitor and not a battery, The battery is locate on the back portion of the bike frame, tilt the bike to its side you'll notice a plate remove the 4 screws flip the plate over. On that plate is the battery it has 2 leads red ( + ) and black ( - ) leave them on until you purchase the new battery. After receiving the Battery their is 2 screw that attach the battery to the plate and replace with new battery reverse procedure to install.
