The question is not whether you can, but what will it do? I wouldn't recommend it for a couple of reasons. First, the additional heat will be very bad for the electronics. Second, the backlight inverter boards generate high voltage which will act like a magnet to attract and soot and dut kicked up from the fireplace, eventually causing problems. Unless you plan on having the fireplace for decoration only, don't do it.

Yes it is called a 'Damper' and controls the draw up the flue chimney. The more open it is, the more the fire with 'draw up', get hotter. It can be used for wood or coal.

I have just lit a coal fire for the first time in the living room, all is OK ecept when I went into the bedroom (2 floors above) I could smell smoke quite badly Any advice?

The chimney needs to be 3 feet taller than the highest point of the house . If you are running the clothes dryer, bathroom vent fan, or exaust hood in kitchen it makes a vacum in the house that can draw smoke into the house down the chimmney . I think when you burn wood or coal in a house it is pretty hard not to be able to smell it. Our house and clothes do not smell like smoke any more since we stopped burning wood.

WILL BE BUYING LCD TV IN NEAR FUTURE, BUT NEED TO MOUNT IN ON WALL WITH FIREPLACE, SEVERAL FEET ABOVE EYE LEVEL. CAN DO?

Absolutly, I have wall mounted a few dozen above fireplaces in the past 5 years; I can even send you over some pictures and suggestions come time for the install.

What is the wall material? Brick mantel or drywall with wood studs?

Although a TV looks attractive about a fireplace you have to consider that it is fatiguing to watch from such a high height. The optimal average height for a TV is 45" to centre (depending on furniture). If you exceed that by a few feet watching a lot of TV is awkward.

The advantage is it combines the focal point of the room, and instead of having a picture about a fire place, your TV becomes the work of art and can be used as a digital picture frame.

Can I wall mount my Tv above a gas fire?

If your talking about enclosed fireplace with the glass front and the vents from it are facing down. Then yes you can use your judgment though. Just make sure their is enough space between the tv, and the fireplace so their isn't direct heat blowing on the tv. A good 4-5 feet above the fire place or more would be fine.

It is strongly suggested to NOT mount any Plasma or LCD TV above or near to a fire place!!! These are very sensitive to heat when it comes to their lifespan.

Just a consumer quesstion.

Heat rises and smoke has particulate matter in it. And heat is the enemy of electronics. So personally, I would not mount any expensive TV over a fireplace. However, if you have nice glass doors covering your fireplace opening, good updraft in your fireplace, and a large mantel that projects out over the opening, you will probably get reasonable life out of your LCD TV.
