This sound you describe is not normal and should be checked quickly, even if it means returning the item.

Sounds like you just fried your magnetron. Normally when they go bad, they make a very loud noise like what you described. The smell concerns me because you may have ruined the waveguide as well. If the magnetron burns through the protective painted surface of the waveguide, the waveguide is ruined. In most microwave ovens this means replacing the entire unit because the waveguide is not replaceable. Putting a new magnetron in a damaged waveguide will result in the same arcing and eventual failure. In addition to the magnetron, the following components are part of the same high voltage network: HV Transformer HV Diode HV Capacitor Magnetron Thermal Cut-Out Any one of these components could have also been damaged. I DO NOT recommend taking any voltage measurements inside the HV network. Potentials of over 4000 volts can be reached and make it very dangerous for the do-it-yourselfer. Taking resistance readings with the unit unplugged is strongly encouraged. If you decide to pursue a repair, inspect the magnetron tip and inside of the waveguide first. If the magnetron is melted and/or there are burn marks inside the waveguide, a new microwave may be a in order. This actually may be a better option than an expensive repair. I hope you find this advice helpful.

SOURCE: G.E. Spacemaker XL1800- Loud constant buzzing noise. Help

My microwave was totally dead. Things I discovered: 1) There is an easily replacable fuse accessed by taking off the top front vent cover (two screws on top, gently massage off) and then the inside plastic grill. UNPLUG before doing this! 2) Pop off two wires on either end of fuse holder for safety. Then pop out fuse and replace. For more extensive help, there is an evelope with a wiring diagram inside the case on the inside wall! Very helpful when diagnosing the surface lamp problem (I forgot to plug the ballast back in when I closed up the bottom).

When door open the microwave should not work at all, if the turntable and light come on with the door open , if they do , then this is an additional problem with door switch and must be fixed.

Regarding humming noise and no heath, Test the high voltage capacitor, the rectifier diode.or the magnetron.

If it additionally does not spin and no light, then check also the door switch.

The diode and capacitors can br tested. The capacitor must be allowed discharge before testing, or you risk to get electrocuted, even if power is off. Capacitors can get discharged by shorting their two contacts.
Replace the magnetron if the checks and all of the high voltage component tests are good, but the unit still does not heat.

All locations, and description of this parts can be located using the diagram here: Counter top.

Parts must be tested to find out what is wrong.

Remember that microwaves are potentially dangerous devices if not repaired properly, the job must be done by a competent person.
A microwave energy leakage test must always be performed when the oven is serviced for any reason.

Regarding parts, contact the seller here to purchase parts. (here in UK).

were you able to replace the magnetron? Did it fix your problem? I have the same issue, and so I wanted to find out from someone who possibly tried it firsthand!

Microwave buzzes when off

This is the power transformer humming, sometimes when transformers get older you get vibrations in the windings due to magnetic fields generated within the transformer which causes the humming noise, It's more annoying than anything and won't affect the operation of the microwave.

GE Spacesaver JVM132K made in November 1993 just died. Made a buzzing sound and went dead. No lights. No camera. No action! Is this fatal?

Buzzing or loud humming is one of the signs the magnetron tube, the microwave source, has gone bad. Since your oven is over 15 years old, this isn't too surprising. It is possible to replace the tube, but it's usually not worth doing. The magnetron is a costly part, and this kind of repair should be left to a professional because of safety concerns. Between part and labor costs, it's often not much more to buy a new oven.

Wont heat. Everything else seems to work. I notice a HUMMING noise while it is opperatiing

A loud humming or buzzing noise would indicate a short on the magnetron circuit, the part that heats the food. These can be expensive to repair since the cost of the magnetron can be as much as a new oven. Get a few estimates before deciding whether to repair or replace.

I press #1 and hit start the blower works and light comes on but no heat

Sounds like the magnetron circuit has failed. It is the part that generates the microwaves that heat the food. It often shorts out, and makes a loud humming or buzzing noise when it fails. It's not usually cost effect to replace since the part alone can cost as much as a new oven.
