Pyramid ps-15kx i had this power supply hooked up to a car amp in my house. after a while of bumping 2 12 inch subs the power supplys voltage went from 13.8 volts to 22.5 volts. i disconnected it from the car amp and it still puts out 22.5 volts. what happened and how can i fix it? it's gotta be something easy enough for me to do instead of taking it in and paying big bucks.

How do I test Them to know if they're bad, or should i just go ahead and replace them? Can i upgrade to something a little better, bigger, stronger to prevent this problem from happening again? Thanks for your help bjrussell.

  • drcut96 Nov 17, 2008

Thanks again bj. I took your advice and tested the 2N3055 transistors. One of them were bad so i replaced it with one of the many i have in other power supplies i have laying around. Once again my power supply puts out 13.8 volts like it should! Now i gotta move on to the next power supply that i blow up somehow. I'll post it up later and maybe you can help me out with that one to. It's an older Heathkit Battery Eliminator.

Unplug the PS-15KX 120V AC cord !! Then take cover off. DO NOT plug the AC cord in unless you are used to working around a lethal voltage and current !!!!!!!!!!

If you can use a Multimeter, then measure resistance across each pair of the 3 leads of the output transistors. You will probably find fractions of an ohm across a pair of leads. One or both may be shorted. NOTE: Do not ever measure resistance in a powered up circuit, kiss meter bye-bye and maybe burn you too.

By putting more robust transistors in this supply, you may not gain much reliability. The supply is rated at a continuous current draw, which is less than the intermittent current they advertise. Read the spec's of any power supply you get and look for continuous current ability.

There are several better transistors that will substitute for the 2N3055. You will need to look at a transistor substitution book and check specs. The internet is great for this. I used to use all kinds of data books, and still have them! But looking up info on-line is nice. Motorola has some that will fit and have higher current and voltage ratings,

Get someone who is a ham or geek if you aren't sure about sticking your fingers in the power supply.

Be Careful, Work Safe, it is a factor of longer life.

Probably have a shorted Pass transistor. That supply may even have the 2N3055 transistors in it.

If you are handy with soldering iron and multimeter it won't be hard to fix.

Schematic is availible At this url.

Note that diagram shows 2N3055's. I believe Radio Shack may still carry these.

THE BEEPS INDICATE THAT THE OVERVOLTAGE PROTECTION IS ACTIVATED,DO NOT HOOK UP ANY THING TO THAT POWER SUPPLY!!!OR THE FULL UNREGULATED VOLTAGE (20-30 VOLTS)WILL PASS FROM THE SHORTED REGULATOR TRANSISTORS TRHU YOUR GALAXY AND FRY IT.GET IT TESTED BY A PRO,USUALLY THE REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR POWER SUPPLY ARE DIRT CHEAP.

Hello, I have a pyramid power supply(PS-52KX), that recently started with a overvoltage problem. I run a Galaxy DX94 HP 10 meter transceiver, and just recently, when I key up the radio, the...

I'm not sure what you mean by 'wide open voltage'. If it's over 17v, the supply may have multiple problems. I don't have the 52kx schematic but other Pyramid supplies have over-voltage protection. There is an SCR that is triggered when the voltage gets to ~17v. This should clamp the output and trigger a shutdown. You should check the 16v Zener diode and the SCR. If the SCR or the Zener is defective, that would prevent the over-voltage from clamping the voltage. Also confirm that the SCR has a solid connection to the ground terminal of the supply. If it's open, that could prevent the clamp from shutting down the supply.

If the voltage is going high, measure the DC voltage from pin 4 to pin 5 of the LM723. It should remain the same at all times. Also measure the voltage from pin 5 to the ground terminal of the supply. That should also remain constant at all times.

Pyramid - PS21KX 20 Amp Powersupply overload

The problem I have had with a PS-20 is a blown capacitor. Hooked to a radio, would allow radio to receive fine, but when trying to transmit, amperage would bottom out. Behind the transformer is a large circuit board. UNPLUG POWER SUPPLY, remove cover, Undo the two nuts, flip board over, and gently rock the 4700uf capacitors side to side. If they move more than 1/16th of an inch, chances are they are blown. Remove/replace and should be good to go...

PS36K power supply overload problem

Most of Pyramid's supplies are based on the LM723 voltage regulator. The DATASHEET should tell you most of what you'll need to know to repair it. THIS is the schematic diagram.

If the output voltage drives the voltmeter to the end of the scale, it likely has one or more shorted power transistors.
