Toshiba 34" is getting power. Can tell by the illuminated LED on the front of the TV. When I go to power it on it makes the sound like its going to come on.....that clicking noise that tv's make......but then nothing comes on the screen and about 10 seconds later it makes another ticking sound. The screen never powers on. -tried to switch plugs -tried to leave it unplugged for like a week......nothing -tried different remote (I had a universal and regular for it) -tried using the panel on the front of the TV in case it was a standby issue.....nothing
Most likly it is a problem in the power supply regulator circuit. pretty common for Toshiba TV sets. If you know about TV serviceing, first thing to replace would be the regulator IC as that is the problem 80% of the time. if that does not help then you will need a schematic to trace out the regulator circuit. Good Luck PS please dont forget to rate this thread.
The ticking sound could be high voltage breakdown, or noise from the line output transformer. The magnetic core material is a ceramic which is magneostrictive. This means, as the transformer core is magnetised by the coils of wire carrying current it changes size. This causes sound to be radiated. If you can hear 15KHz coming from the television, then the line timebase is working. If all you hear is a ticking sound, then most probably the circuit has a fault, such as a faulty line output transformer. If you have a good TV which ticks, it probably has a bad earth connection to the tube, or some arcing, and must be put right as this could cause a fault to occur.

yes they do go bad. try cleaning the inside of the remote and check for a bad solder connection with-in the remote. the key pad can get dirty from your handling maybe a good cleaning but do not scrub it just lightly touch the pad with cue tip and alcohol

Here's something that might also be useful. After you turn on the set, and get the regular red blinky lights, hold down the Device and Menu buttons together for about 5 seconds.
The Power light will start to flash in a two digit sequence.
For example, 3 flashes, then 7 flashes = 37.
Here are the error codes, and the corresponding problem:
12 = No error detected, check power supply.
32 = Lamp Cover is open.
33 = Air filter cover is open.
34 = Lamp abnormality
36 = Light Engine (DMD or Lamp Fan stopped)
37 = Exhaust or Lamp Ballast Fan stopped
38 = Lamp Temperature High
39 = DMD Temperature High
41 = Short is detected
44 = DVI cable between FMT and Engine disconnected
