Maytag washer drum belt worn out....does that damage other parts?

Not sure is same model but very similar. I have a terrible habit of putting way too many clothes in my machine, even though I know it shortens thew life of the belt and the clothes don't get as clean. But enough whining: The belt popped off twice with an unbalanced load, and I know it now needs replacing. Thankfully, it looked so easy on YouTube, I did find the problem and put the belt back on long enough to get another ordered. Q: If otherwise the washer seems okay, is this the cheap and easy fix it seems, or might other damage have occurred from all that overloaded/unbalanced loads? Am I doing any harm running a few small loads on the old belt in the meantime?

OOPS-I think it's called a drive belt, not drum belt (insert red face here)

  • Jesse Mason Apr 09, 2012

It is a drive belt. But there is only 1 belt on the bottom and every Maytage video on youTube shows Maytags having both a pump belt AND drive belt; both being attached to the same (pulley or whatever the 3rd, fixed round thing with a groove for the belts; in which case there are TWO grooves tacked a top one another, pump belt closer to machine that drive belt).

Problem is, mine does seem to have only 1 channel for one belt. I did find mewntion of a one-belt Maytag Performa, but the !@#$%^ model number is NOwhere! Instead, where it should be, there is just a note advising to PROVIDE a model no. for all communication with Maytag corp. I've looked everywhere else they ever put model no.s on any machines and--nothing!!

I am a religious saver of user manuals, and I have evry one I've ever gotten, except the washer one has disappeared!

It has had one repair visit, when somnething got between washer drum and that belt went bad, 5 years ago. I may have offered the manual to the repairman, who doubtless didn't need it, but may have packed it up accidentally, or tossed it.

Anybody every heard of a one-belt washer, belt on the bottom outside? I got the (presumably correct belt from an online site based on my best guess model no. PAVT2448WW web pics/year, etc. It does appear to almost fit, just new and tight--put unless pump can be loosened/moved, no way I can just put it back on with just my strength.

I did leanr to put a new belt on and the machine is running fine 2 belts later, still being overloaded now and then (which is why thre belts wear out faster...and I do think that whatever helps balance the load in older top-load belt-driven washers that were advertised as hard to unbalance has gotten a bit worn. But I've been abusing this machine since June 2002, and 12 years later, 2 new belts is all it has required. If only the new Maytags will be this good.

I ended up buying a generic belt form a washer repair supply website, advertised as fitting Maytags and similar ones.

SOURCE: Not happy with Maytag Neptune TL Washer

I assume you are taking dc/UC errors to the console. This is a classic problem with the FAV6800AW/FAV9800AW after the 3yr to 5 yr mark. I own the machine and decided to learn what was involved to repair the machine. Take a look at this post and see if will give you some insight to a DIY fix to resolve the unbalance errors. No fix for the tumbler action of twisting up the clothes. After a re-lube of the one-way roller clutch bearing I could wash a single pair of socks or over load the wash basket with bath towels and extra water in the tub with no unbalance errors (dc/UC).

Shout back if you have any questions.

Here is a quick test for the TSD sensor but I believe you have a clutch issue. The TDS test is in the SM I’ve typed it out if you want to give a quick check. I’m sure you will pass and find the one-way roller clutch berings are dry/rusted and causing the dc/UC unbalance condition.

3.0 Tub Displacement Sensor Diagnostics check.

It is possible the Tub Displacement Sensor may have failed try this check which is in the Troubleshooting guide stored in your washer console or refer to the SM.

3a. Enter the Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”

3b. Press the Super Wash key display reads “in”…something like that.

3c. Press Delicates the Display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

3d. Push tub to the back right corner of the machine the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

3e. Press Hand Wash.

3f. Pull tub to the front left corner while pushing the tub down the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). If you get these results your Tub Displacement sensor should be OK and I believe it’s not the component failure producing dc/UC errors in spin cycle. I would remove the clutch for inspection and re-lube or replace if necessary. There is a more technical troubleshooting method to check Tub Displacement Sensor in the Troubleshooting guide and Service manual.

I HAVE A MAGTAG PPTS20 HOW DO I DO THE BELT

If you are talking about replacing the belt wit a new one.
YOU NEED TO FIRST UNPLUG THE DRYER!
This is a difficult procedure, you have to take the dryer apart, this includes removing the drum. after you remove the drum, place the belt around the drum, there will be a place worn where the old belt was, with the belt on the drum put back in the dryer, place the belt on the motor pulley with the tension pulley pushing on the belt. Make sure to get the felt around the drum in the back. Replace the parts you removed. plug back in and see if runs ok.
This is very difficult and is why we get $95 + parts
Thank You

How to replace belt on maytag washer mav6451aww

not sure on model but if its like any other washer look to see where the belt runs around should run around motor and a big wheel looking thing that joins to tub on the moter there should be three nuts and bolts 2 to keep it aginst bulk of washer an 1 that should be able to ajust losen this one move the motor so there is enough room to put new belt on make sure that the belt goes in the runners of the motor and drum part use a large screw driver to lever the motor so belt goes tight and still with the tension on belt fasten the nut up harder to describe than actually do hope this helps ivan uk

Washer is making a terrible sound, I think it is a loose or worn drive belt because it does not agitate or spin properly

is the nois a grinding, whirring noise? I think the motor coupling has gone bad. Not an extremely hard repair and a repair man should only charge around $25.00 for the part and his service call. You can do this yourself if your mechanically inclined. the coupling is under the drum and you have to take the front cover off to get to it.

What does the lr code mean

The code means locked rotor. Disconnect power to the washer and remove the rear access panel. Remove the rear access panel securing screws and pull the panel off the cabinet.

Turn the drum pulley by hand to determine if there's a restriction that caused the locked rotor error. If there's a restriction, remove the drive belt. Pull the belt from one side of the drum pulley then turn the pulley in such a way that the belt unwraps from it.

Turn the drum pulley and the motor pulley to determine whether the drum or the rotor is being restricted.

The outer tub bearing is damaged if there's restriction in the drum pulley. Specify the model of your washer for the specific replacement part/s and installation guide.

Try to free the rotor if it is stuck by forcibly turning it back and forth. Replace the drive motor if the rotor cannot be unstuck. Specify the model of your washer for the specific replacement part and installation guide.
