I have had the Panasonic SC HT900 for about 3 years (out of warranty). The problem I am having is that the surround sound mode on TV and Tuner and the digial in mode all will not work. If the TV and Tuner are in stereo mode (just the front speakers and center speaker) they work fine. The DVD/CD mode sound works fine in all modes (stereo, surround sound, dolby digital). The problems occurrs when putting the system into the digital mode or the surround sound mode while the system is on the TV input or Tuner. Sometimes the sound will work for a few minutes and then there will be a "pop" noise and the sound will go out. If I change the mode to stereo then it will work again, but as soon as you change it back to surround sound the sound will go out. I took it to a repair show about 2 months ago and they advised they could not find a problem. I brought the unit home and it worked for about two weeks and then started messing up again...over the next few weeks the problem got worse and then finally the surround sound and digital modes will not work at all anymore. I have checked all speaker connections and as I previously stated the DVD/CD surround and dolby digital modes work fine. Any advice you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks, Greg Edmondson

I have the same probelm when playing a dvd does it work then when u press the surround sound button it goes slient ???
When I play a DVD it works fine and the problem comes and goes...sometimes at the worst time (i.e. during SuperBowl this last year). I have had two repair shops look at it and both advised they could not figure out what the problem was and that the home theater in a box systems are only made to last about 3 years or so if use reguarly. They said that they are made with cheap parts and these parts get out and burn up or wear out easily. I am staying with this system until it completely quits on me, as long as it still plays DVD's fine I will keep it for my kids to watch movies on. Good luck with your system.
I tried to fix the popping defect to no avail. I thought if i powered the internal subwoofer fan to a different power source that it would solve the issue. Although the fan spins faster connected to an external power source, and it keeps the sub motherboard cooler, it still pops (less often) and loses sound. The fan just cools it faster so that it can happen again. The working fan only extends the functionality twice as long but still has the same issue. I did notice on the subwoofer motherboard that there's a dark spot near a few transistors/regulators. I suspect at least one of them have already failed causing the system to overheat anyway. I also suspect that if I keep using the system, those will also fail. I will never buy anything Panasonic and neither will anyone I know (I'll tell them all not to). Don't buy this product.

Gregory, it seems like I have the same exact problem on the same unit. Have you been able to repair yours since your post?
I too have the same issues. I can get a stable state on only one setting. The Surround feature has to be off and the SFC must be set to flat. If I leave this horrible system set there, it works fine. Of course there is no sound coming from the two rear speakers.
Anytime I try to activate any other SFC setting or put it in Surround Sound mode it pops and squeals and pukes out horrid bursts of static. It's insidious and Panasonic is absolutely aware of this issue yet they will do nothing.
My system is a few years old and has been like this since month 4 or 5 of having it home. I allowed the one year warranty period to run out and never took it in for repair and of course, Panasonic refuses to admit they made a pile of junk and stand behind the mistake.
If there are enough of us willing to initiate a class action suitagainst Panasonic, I would be happy to organize it. I can be reached [email protected] if you would like to join in on that idea.
Does anyone have any idea parts could be replaced on the logic board that might resolve these problem and bring this systme to fully usable state? I am quite handy with a soldering iron and I am sure I could fix it if anyone could tell me which parts are causing this problem.
