Documents open, by default, according to settings on your PC/laptop, as they do not 'know' what created them.

for example, all documernts created by microsoft works word processor would normall have file names ending .wps or .wpt.

In Control Panel > Folder Options (under the File Types tab) there is a list of every File Type and what application will be used to open this type of file.

On my XP system, for example, I see types WPS and WPT are both associated with ."microsoft works word processor ", so it would be used to open such files.

It is possble this information is corrupt on yours, but unlikely. I do not suggest you try to 'fix' this as you may make this worse. Try to get a friend or\ local shop to look.

Alternatively, you may be (accidentally) giving your files the EXTENSION (the .xxx part of the name). If so, that would make your PC believe they were some other type and try to open them with the wrong application.

Sorry if the above doesn't help. It may at least point you or a friend further down tyhe path.

By the way, this is not a Router related issue, as posting heading suggests, but never mind.

I was working in a word doc at home. I emailed it to myself so I could work on it at work. After opening the doc at work I worked on it some more. I clicked the save icon and closed the doc. When I opened...

When you open the email to which the document is attached, right click on the attachment and save it to your desktop and work on it from there.

When you are completed, create a new email to send it back to yourself and do the same thing when you get the document back to work.

If you are using Outlook, attachments will often be saved here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook

It will be a hidden folder, but you can copy and paste that path into your Windows Explorer window's address line.

What is the main function of microsoft word?

The most basic function of MS Word is to create a document/file. Once a document has been created, the user may enter data - for example by typing some text. At any point after the document has been created, the user is allowed to save the contents. The document can then be accessed at a later time and modified as necessary. Documents can be printed out at any stage in this process.

What is the meaning of X in the word DOCX?

The X stands for XML (Extensible Markup Language), which is the programming language behind the scenes in Office 2007 programs.
Previous versions of Word were based on binary data. Binary data is, by nature, prone to corruption, and "bloated."
By changing the background code, Microsoft was able to create new tools and features in Word 2007 that would not have been possible otherwise.

Eddited documents

The relevant issue here is what word processor you are using and is the problem that you cannot open the document or the recipient. With Office 2007 you have *.docx extensions that cannot be opened in older Office suites but you can save as a compatible format. Notepad only saves as text and so that is a true mystery or virus that I have never seen. Every Office suite offers 'reader' downloads that allow any reader to open and view. Steve Medley
