Compressor tries to start

I have a GE 8000 BTU portable AC unit. On occasion, when turning the unit on into cool mode, the fan and all work fine but when the compressor tries to turn on, it fails, then tries again about 30 seconds later and usually goes on on the second try, though today it took 3 tries (went on on the third try). Once on, it stays on with no issues. It doesnt happen everytime I turn it on, in fact it only seems to happen once in awhile. On occasion, the compressor makes a loud sound when starting as well. And the floor around the unit always vibrates when its running, though it is being used in a mobile home. My biggest question, exactly whats wrong with it and how long will the unit last until it completely goes, and is it worth it to fix? Thanks.

It could be a voltage problem. Are you using an extension cord, If you are what gauge is it? It should be at least 14 gauge. If the cord is 16 gauge you could have to much voltage drop at start up. Or you could have something else on the same breaker, when it is running and the compressor tries to start your voltage may drop considerably.and the compressor won't start.

SOURCE: My GE portable a/c will

I would say that if it starts cooling when it's turned on, then it has freon in it. Sounds more like it's kicking off on high head pressure, meaning the condenser is not getting cooled, head pressure builds up then a safety limit switch shuts it down to save the compressor from burning out.. Is there a condenser fan maybe not operating? or are the condenser coils clogged up with dirt?

Do you hear compresser start up noise. If so then please check it with a clamp meter and Amperage the Unit is drwing. If it is less than 8-9 Amps than there is some leakage in the AC and all the collent has leaked. So you got to get it serviced.

Air Conditioning broken - fan still works

Probably a control board failure. If the modes don't work and the fan auto/on works, I'd say the circuit board has failed. Does the fan turn on when cool is selected? If not, 99% sure it's the board. If it does, it's probably a compressor component issue. Window units are considered throw aways.

I bought a ge 8000 btu portable ac unit but i don't know how to get it into cool mode it will only run when fan is on. should the same picture on the remote be on the screen of the ac unit. how long should...

mcdevito75 here, First Place the FAN on low or it may not say fan rather low cool, for 3 minutes, then the other control to 60--65 degress or 1/2 way thru the Blue indication on that control, compressor should come on. If it"s an old unit in need of service 2years old or older check out your local A/C repair shop they come to the house, also you can clean or replace the filter just under the cover where the controls are. FAN or LOW COOL FIRST FOR 3 Minutes, then Teperature to 60--65 degrees.

this could be just a simple fix of cleaning the condenser coils. If semi-clogged, it can cause higher than normal pressures and cause the compressor to cut out on it protector. Check it out.

GE Air conditioner cannot kick into airconditioning mode

it sounds like either the start components for the compressor have failed or the compressor itself has failed, since it is not kicking the breaker I would lean towards start components.if it is a PSC only comprssor, you may be able to add a start assist to get the compressor started. I assume that since it is 8000 btu it is 110VAC you can probably get a generic start kit at your local appliance parts house. they have a diagram and are fairly easy to install, just be aware that the capacitor storea charge on the OFF cycle, and can be dangerous

My GE portable air conditioner is not cooling but fan works

I think it's becuase the water tank on the side is full and when that happens it turns off. Empty the water...and then reach your hand in and find a small reset button press it and then but the chamber back in and see if that works. I had that problem and same code

Wont no water to empty or drain

Either the unit is really dirty or it is low on refrigerant. A unit tha is low on refrigerant will start off cold and withing a few minutes, start warming up. If you aren't seeing any water its because of one or both causes listed.
