This will help you for sure just read it  When I switch on my Archos device, the following message is displayed: “Would you like to recover your system?” What does it mean and what should I do? You are on the recovery mode screen. It means that your hard drive has been damaged and must be repaired or formatted.
With this system recovery mode, you will have to select between “Repair Disk” and “Format Disk”.
Start by selecting “Repair Disk” and follow the instructions displayed on the screen. See the full PDF manual (available on the Archos web site) on how to use the Repair and Format options.

If repairing the disk did not work, try formatting the disk by selecting “Format Disk”. Note that the formatting will erase all data.

If you still cannot restart your Archos after trying a system recovery, you should contact Archos technical support.

See:

When I switch on my Archos device, the following message is displayed: "Would you like to recover your system?" What does it mean and what should I do?

It means that there is a hard drive error due to damage. The hard drive can be repaired by selecting 'Repair Disk'.

I tried to translate this for you using Google Translate, but Fixya would not allow it.

Good luck from Detroit, MI, USA.

This is a recovery mode, and this menu allows you to:

-Format your hard drive
-Restore your system

In case of repair disk is selected :

For the first step you have to go on our website, and download the latest firmware update for your product.

Plug your Archos 504/604 on the computer and copy the firmware previously downloaded at the root of your device.

Disconnect your device as usual, and select done on the screen.

You have to plug the dc adaptor to update successfully, press a button to reboot your device.here is the web address  http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates.html?country=us&lang=en&#firm

I think it means 'File system FAT error'. Use the solution above by IPOD tech for reformatting the hard disk. It should be OK. I used the solution to reformat my archos7 last night, and it is working fine.

"a service installation section in this INF is invalid"

If the player is showing up in your Windows' Device Manager under "portable devices" with a yellow "!":

1.) Right-click the yellow "!" and choose "update driver".
2.) When given the option to connect to Windows Update, choose "no, not this time" and click next.
3.) Choose "Install from a specific location (advanced)" and click next.
4.) Choose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and click next.
5.) Click the "Have Disk" button. Browse to C:\Windows\inf and choose the file marked "wpdmtp.inf"

I can't believe the generic players have such crappy support when so many people have this problem! I think the Windows file problem might be caused by "compressing old files" when you do a disk cleanup.
