Hi, Television died the other day most unexpected, Symptoms: 1. On switching on there was a high pitched squealling with a flickering screen then auto switch off after 10-20 sec.s standby light flashed three times. 2. On switching on now there is a clicking noise which lasts for 10 sec.s then shut down. no squealling noise or start up. looked at main fuse - ok looked at "P" board -seemed ok looked at "A" board- solder on R9611 thru R9615 seemed a bit rough but checked out with meter, Would really appreciate some direction on next course of action, Can you help regards jon
This sounds like a line timebase failure. The line timebase works at about 15 thousand cycles per second (15KHz) which may be audible to some people due to the iron-ferrite materials used (magnetostrictive). The line output transformer is highly stressed and also has the rectifier diodes in the outside if the windings. It is all very well insulated to guard against moisture and dust but if it breaks down due to the high voltages (25Kv) the arc produced makes this squealing noise, and of course it burns out, and breaks down. This may not blow the fuse if there is not a short circuit. So get an engineer if you are not sure about changing the line output transformer.
