Eventually the unit wouldn't turn on at all. I took the cover off and found a burnt part (C240) which I assume is a capacitor. What caused the overheating and how can I fix it. Thanks
Depending what happened is the key to solving this, chances are the audio outputs got very hot causing a short which overheated the capacitor, I would inspect and test parts near by to be sure no other part has been compromized. Check all speaker wires for shorts, "a common problem" and take your time when servicing, if unsure! have a professional assess.

I JUST EXPERIENCED THE SAME SITUATION HERE IS THE SOULTION YAMAHA SENT ME TO RESET THE SYSTEM HTR-5990 YAMAHA HTR-5990 FACTORY PRESET PROCEDURES All models require the STANDBY/ON button to be turned OFF to start the reset process. I own this receiver, and 18db is damn loud. Granted - your room might be significantly larger than mine with your speakers spread much further apart, or your speakers might be much less efficient than mine (this means that they want more power than the receiver can dish out - I have whatever speakers came with the "YAMAHA Home Theater in a Box" [the model that came with the HTR-5830]), but I'm pretty sure that the receiver doesn't get any louder (or at least not much). My suggestion is to turn down the volume to about -20db and work up from there after the movie has started. It might be easier to test the volume using music. The negative sign is deceiving - I rarely bring mine up to 0db. Also check the resistance - there's a red switch on the back of the receiver that switches between 6 and 8 ohms - make sure that it matches your speakers' resistance. If turning down the volume doesn't work, then post the problem again. Hope This Helps.

These units have protection circuits that will prevent the speaker relay from engaging if there is a problem detected. There is also a circuit that causes a delay in the engaging of the relay to allow the amp to "settle in". This prevents the old "thump" that was common in older models when the set was first turned on. In your case, either the RC circuit is faulty causing excessive time to pass before turning on the relay, or there is excessive voltage floating around that the protection circuits are detecting and thus preventing the relay from turning on.
In any case, this will require additional diagnosis using some test equipment. This is not a problem that will be easily resolved remotely. Please bring this unit to a repair shop for an estimate. Once you have that info, we can assist with the actual repair.

Is it going into protect mode???
If so, check your speaker connections. Make sure there are no loose copper wires hanging out, and that your splices are clean at both the receiver and the speaker.
