Possible power cable fault, hard to tell really, especially if you ran the laptop battery flat, but it may be a flat cmos (bios) motherboard battery, also check that the hibernate switch where you close your laptop lid is not stuck down as this will dissable power up.

I have the same problem and believe I have discovered the source of the problem. When I removed the back panel of the laptop, it started up just fine. I discovered that when applying pressure to the back of the board in the area of the hibernate switch, the laptop went into hibernate mode. If I kept pressure on the switch (simulating the back cover in place) I was not able to restart the laptop. However once I released the pressure, the laptop started just fine.

The switch seems to be spring actuated, designed to trigger the hibernate mode when the latch applies pressure against the switch depressing the spring. Apparantly the speing has failed thus resulting in the switch being engaged all the time.

I don't know if Sony makes a replacement switch but that seems to be what would solve the problem. I have learned one thing though, there is more built-in obsolecence in these machines all the time. I don't understand why they can't simply make a long lasting product for the $$$ we spend.

DIP SWITCH BIOS RESET POSITIONS SONY VAIO VGN-fs660

Hello,
There are 2 ways you can reset your bios2_bing.gif.

1. On the motherboard there is a small watch battery. Remove this battery along with the power cable from the power supply. Hold down the power button to fully discharge the system. Wait 2-3 minutes then reinstall the battery and plug in2_bing.gif your system. Your reset is now complete

2. Some motherboards have a 3 pin jumper by the battery. Lets say that the jumper is on pins 2 and 3. Remove the jumper while the machine is OFF and place onto pins 1 and 2. Power on your machine for a minute. (Note: Your system will not POST). Shutdown your machine and put the jumper back to pins 2 and 3. Your reset is now complete

This is a great troubleshooting2_bing.gif step for those of you having POST issues or no POSTing at all. Like other troubleshooting steps, this will not always work but usually will depending on the problem.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
Thanks.

There is no power going into my laptop with or without power cord. It has a battery in it and the power cable seems like it is getting power, because the green light is on on the box.

check your DC output voltage using multimeter. if you dont have a multimeter short circuit your power pin using a wire or paper clip. if that green light goes off your charging unite is working properly.

SONY VAIO CMOS BATTERY LOCATION

Correction...

The CMOS battery is located under the system board, and is not accessible from under the keyboard.

The keyboard has to be removed in order to change the CMOS batter, (another reason why I don't like Sony laptops.)

Below is the batter I just pulled from a user's VGN-FS660\W 892cbd5.jpg
