Bernette 134D I have a Bernette 134D overlocker and a My Lock 134D manual which was supplied with the machine brought second hand. I am attempting rolled hemming and the manual says set the stitch length to 'R' - there is no 'R' simply 1, 2, N, 3, 4 - can you enlighten me PLEASE. Most of the instructions in the manual definitely apply to my machine but not this one. I have a rolled hem stitch plate which I have successfully attached but would like specific instructions for the actual stitch requirements.

Stitch length should be set between 1 to 2.

This may be too small to read, if so, email via
www.bargainbox.com.au and I shall send it on........remember to only ever use the R needle, so you only have 3 threads.

To move the Rolled hem arm, you will need to release the upper knife (knob on left inside cover....push to the right and blade moves approx 6mm) so you can slide the small metal tongue to correct position for:

N = Normal
R = Rolled

SOURCE: How do I change the stiches?

You can do all of these stitches by using different combinations of your stitch selector, stitch width and stitch feed knobs, for instance, on the panel I can see on your machine:

http://www.jo-ann.com/joann/product/images/52659.jsp?CATID=cat3122&PRODID=prd11333

Stitches 1, 2 & 3 are straight stitches, centered, left and right. Really basic stuff, not different stitches at all. 4,5,6,7 & 8 are zig-zag stitches of different widths. 9 is the widest zig-zag (no. 8) on a finer stitch length, etc...

I think you should try and get an instruction manual for your machine. After a lengthy search of my usual manual sources, I've determined that that this may not be so easy. I think you should contact White on their 800 number and let them try and help you... 1-800-331-3164.

If you found this helpful, please vote generously as I receive nothing other than acknowledgement for my time.

I am not getting an even rolled hem on a heavier fabric. I am only using 3 cones of Maxi Lock.

You can not do a rolled hem on heavier material. It is only for thin cloth. You have to do a 3 thread narrow edge on heavier cloth.

I need to switch to rolled hemming and can't find my manual

Is this on a serger?

Rolled hemming on a serger is usually achieved by doing the following: thread up for three thread overlock using right hand needle. Move blade to the right to trim fabric wider (so it rolls inside the seam). Put woolly overlock thread through top looper (this gives a smooth finish to the rolled hem). Loosen off top looper and tighten up bottom looper so the bottom looper is up tight against the needle thread on the underside. Test serge to get the stitch right, then turn the stitch length down to 0.5 to close it up tight (this uses loads of thread so I usually get everything else right first, then make this final adjustment). On my Bernette 334D tensions are R-Needle - 5, Top looper 7-8 and bottom looper is 3-4. Stitch length 0.5, differential zero.

And usually you flick a small lever or change a little finger on the foot or plate where the stitch forms, there is some variation here between models. Early Elna L4 and L5 locks you had a little finger you changed with a screwdriver on the pressure foot. Bernette has a little slide mechanicism near the blade that you flick forward to engage.

Hope this is of assistance to you - I went for a 2 hour lesson on my serger when I bought it and then came home and repeated all the techniques shown and then made notes and stapled all the stitch samples into a notebook so I could remember how I did it.

Also there are some great books on Serging, Nancy Zieman is one name that springs to mind. Or try You-Tube, she has some videos up there too showing different techniques.
