Television will not program channels 2-7

Hello,

First, you need to check if the cables are properly connected to the television. Then you also check if you have your television on the appropriate channel that is to work with the DVD player/VCR combo for instance the AV channel. Then you can further try to change the cord used in connecting the DVD player to the television, if it does the same, then the problem is most likely from either the DVD's Audio Video port or from the Televisions Audio video port.

Have them both checked to detect which is faulty, and replace with the same type of port where fault is detected.

2. On the remote control, press a device key once (i.e., DVD/VCR,
CBL/SAT,or TV).

a VCR Combo device, you will be able to control channel selection,
volume, and VCR functions.

3. Press and hold SET until the LED (red light) blinks twice,
then release SET.

4. Use the Manufacturer’s Codes to locate the type of device and brand name and then enter
the first four-digit code for your device. If performed correctly,
the LED will blink twice.

5. Aim the remote control at the device and press POWER
once.The device should turn off. If it does not, repeat
steps 2 through 5, trying each code for your brand until
you find one that works.

Leave the cable box powered on but disconnected from the TV or VCR. All other components should be disconnected and unplugged, giving clear and easy access to all connections. If components sit in an entertainment unit, make sure all A/V cables can reach the RF modulator and the cable from the modulator can easily reach the television.

Step 2 Hookup the first coaxial cable from cable box output, usually labeled "TV," "TV out" or "Out to TV" to the cable "In" on the VCR. Connect the second coaxial cable from the VCR's out to "TV" to the coaxial input on the RF Modulator.

Step 3 Connect the third coax cable from the coaxial cable "Out" jack on the RF Modulator to the coax cable "Input" on the television.

Step 4 Take one A/V cable, connect the red (right audio channel,) white (left audio channel) and yellow (video) from DVD player's "Output," to the corresponding DVD "inputs" on the RF Modulator. Place components as desired but still disconnected from power. Plug in all power cables including the RF Modulator's into the surge protected outlet strip.

Step 5 Make sure the Channel select switch usually found on the back of the VCR and the Channel select switch on the RF Modulator are both set to Channel 3. This channel is used on the television to view your components.

Step 6 Turn on the power strip and turn on the TV. Cable reception should come on as usual. Set the TV to Channel 3 and turn on the VCR. With VCR on test it by playing a video tape. The RF Modulator should sense the signal and automatically switch to "VCR."

Step 7 Switch off the VCR and with the television still on channel 3, turn on the DVD player. As the RF Modulator senses the DVD player signal and switches to DVD, its welcome screen should be seen on the television. Play a DVD to test and once you're done with the DVD turn it off and the cable should come back on.

When you say "can't get the TV to play through the VCR", do you mean that you can't get the cable-stations to play through the VCR to the TV? I'll assume that's what you're trying to accomplish.

The most common way to connect a VCR to a TV is through a coaxial cable, from the port on the rear of the VCR labeled "Out to TV." There should be another coaxial port labeled "Cable/Ant In." This is where I picture your cable programming is currently connected.

Instead, it sounds like you connected the VCR to a modulator (probably thru RCA composite cables, which have yellow / red / white plugs). Then the modulator connects to the TV thru a coaxial cable. This will successfully play the VCR to whatever specific channel (perhaps 2, 3 or4), but the modulator doesn't know of any other signals to send to your TV.

2 possible solutions:

1) If the modulator has a coaxial port labeled "Cable/Ant In" or something indicating "In" at a threaded coaxial port, connect your cable-programming to this instead of the to the VCR.

Depending on what type of modulator it is, when you want to switch from watching the VCR to watching cable-programming, you might have to push a button on the modulator to make the swtich, or you might not. Your modulator might put the VCR on channel 3, and allow the higher cable channels to filter though to their respective stations. Most cable providers will leave channels 2, 3 and 4 blank for this purpose. Try it and see.

2) Axe the modulator. Take it out of the system entirely. Connect your cable programming to the VCR "Cable/Ant In" and use another coaxial cable to go from the VCR's "Out to TV" port to the TV. When you want to switch from watching the VCR to watching cable, press a button on your VCR or the VCR's remote. Usually this button is labled, "TV/VCR."

If this does not help, write back and explain in more detail how your system is currently connected.

If you lost the remote for a zenith television and want play a movie on an input, use the channel up/down buttons to navigate. Ususally if your on ch 2, press the down button. Line 1/2 will appear on a blackscreen if the device is off. Otherwise, I have had great success using a GE universal remote with my Zenith tv/vcr combo unit. (by the way, I work for the technical support department for my city's local cable company)

Use a VCR as a A/B switch. Run Cable signal into VCR. Run coax cable out of VCR into television. Connect DVD to VCR (line in) using RCA cables. To use DVD, set VCR channel to L1 or L2 or AUX, depending on VCR type. Set VCR to channel 3 or 4 to watch television. VCR must be powered up to watch DVD.

This is a problem a lot of people have with coaxial-only televisions because DVD players do not have coaxial (RF) outputs, which means they can't be connected directly into a television with only a coaxial (RF) input. The solution is to purchase a RF modulator, which is a small device that will convert the AV output from the DVD player to coaxial (RF).
As for the instructions, I am going to assume the DVD player is not a combo unit with the VCR, and that you want to record TV on your VCR. Step 4 will include connecting your DVD player, but if the DVD player is a combo unit with the VCR, just ignore step 4 part as DVD connection will be included in the VCR set up. Actually, you wouldn't need the RF modulator if it is a VCD/DVD combo unit.

1. Connect the coaxial cable coming out from the wall to your digital cable box in the ‘video in’ slot. It might also be labeled ‘antenna in’ or ‘cable in’.
2. From the cable box, connect a coaxial or composite (yellow video cable) and stereo (red-white) RCA audio cables to the VIDEO IN terminal on your VCR.
3. From the VCR, you will have to connect this to the RF Modulator using a coaxial cable from the VIDEO OUT on the VCR to one of the IN ports on your RF modulator.
4. You can now connect your DVD player to the RF Modulator by using the yellow-red-white composite/RCA cables from the VIDEO OUT on the DVD player to another port on the RF modulator.
5. From the RF modulator, connect this unit to your TV by using a coaxial cable. It will be from the VIDEO OUT on the RF modulator to the VIDEO IN or CABLE or ANTENNA IN port on your television.

This should be all you need to get started watching your digital television. In simple terms here is what you did:
Coaxial from wall to cable box
Cable box to VCR
VCR to RF modulator
DVD player to RF Modulator
RF modulator to TV
You will only be able to record what is on channel

This is an easy and quick fix.

What you will need:

RCA cables (audio)
( possibly Line out converter )

Your television is either going to need Video Out, or if you have a VCR or VCR/DVD combo connected to your television. Assuming that you have a VCR combo, the way your tv should be set up is on the back of the vcr combo, your cable will run into the coaxial IN and then you have another cable running from Coaxial OUT to your tv. If you have it set up like this, then the DVD / VCR combo will have RCA Audio / video out ports on the back side. Run RCA cables from the DVD / VCR output to the surround sound INPUT. If you already have your inputs in use on the surround sound, Radioshack has RCA splitters for about $1.50 each, you might need to pick some of them up so you dont have to go through the trouble of reaching behind it all the time to disconnect and reconnect whatever your trying to connect. Now if you dont have the DVD / VCR combo, then your TV "MUST" have RCA Outputs. if it doesnt, then the only way that your going to have your surround sound connected to your tv is to take the TV apart and get a RCA "Line output converter" and wire it to the left / right channels of your tv. From what I've read, i think this is what your trying to do so I hope this helps
