I was changing the bobbin and when I put it back in I'm not sure what happened but the black plastice piece that the bobbin case fits onto is just free wheeling in there and won't hold the required position for the needle to go down and pick up the bobbin threrad. Any ideas? Just finishing a quilt...now is not the time to quit!!!!

A few suggestions:
If the basic cleaning and re-threading (above) don't help, your machine(s) may be out of time or have another mechanical issue that will require a repair technician. We recommend a tech trained on your specific brands - they'll be better trained and able to get any repair parts that may be needed.
Hope this helps narrow down your stitching problems.
Happy sewing,

This description sounds like the machine is out of time. The needle should match up with a cut out section in the bottom of the bobbin area. If it is hitting, the timing has slipped, probably from sewing on a fabric that was too heavy for the machine.
SOURCE: while sewing the bobbin case moves, wheel locks up, needle locks
Im not sure if this will help but thought I would pass it along. My Pfaff 6122 tells me to check bobbin for thread unrolling clockwise before you place it back in the machine. I had mine turned to un roll counter clockwise, this is wrong, the bobbin will fall out when you pull on the thread while you are holding it in your hand. You may just keep putting it in backwards. Hope this works for you. J.R.

This is common problem with the 2140/44/70 as the hook baskets (black piece that holds the bobbin case) are made of plastic, rather than metal, like previous Pfaff machines. Most people end up getting a new machine because not many people seem to know how to fix this, but it's easy.
What happens is the screw holding position bar (bar with a notch that keeps the black piece from fully spinning) loosens, and ultimately wears grooves into the black plastic basket; allowing it to freely spin. If the basket isn't worn too much, you can reposition and tighten the position bar. There should be a 0.07 mm gap between the position bar notch, and the black plastic basket. If you can't measure 0.07 mm, it is BARELY enough of a gap so they don't touch, the thickness of a few pieces of printer paper.
If the plastic basket is worn too much, it will need to be replaced. You do NOT need the entire hook assembly. Replacements are hard to come by, but sometimes they are on eBay. If you can afford it, or can find a good deal, the older metal basket from any Pfaff machine will also work. I replaced my plastic one with a basket from a Creative 1471. Beware the metal baskets are louder when sewing, but more durable.
Because the bar needs to be re-tightened every so often, and there is only one screw holding it (previous Pfaffs had two), it will eventually strip the hole in the aluminum chassis. Most people think their machine is unfix-able after this. Fear not, your machine CAN be fixed! To do this, you need a 4mm Helicoil repair kit (you can find this on Amazon for about $15). There are many videos on YouTube that show how to install a Helicoil. If you know how to use a battery powered-drill, you can do this yourself. If not, you will need to find someone who has experience drilling.
