Make sure you're trying to read a good store bought music cd and not one some friend made for you. Some computers have problems reading some of the cd's made by someone.

It sounds like you need to replace the DVD Rom itself.
They do go bad without warning.
A DVD Rom is not that expensive and should take about 5 min to replace rather easy job.

SOURCE: My compaq presario V6500 does not see any CD/DVD

friend first check ur bios setting
for go to ur bios setting restart ur laptop
and press del and f2 key
after that check wither ur cdrom is must enable

and if ur problem not solved
try this
turn of ur laptop
discharge battery
open the 2 screws of ur cd rom
and eject it
blow some air and put it again
now start it
ur problem will resolve

Hi the DVD and CD is not working in my laptop. My lap is Compaq Presario CQ40. When i insert one DVD or VCD its not reading, after some time its showing insert the DISC.

This is mostly associated with DVD drives that are very fragile and are not toughly built. If it had any kind of jam or serious hit recently, this could be the cause.
To solve this issue, you would heave to open the laptop or extract the DVD drive. It is advised that you send it to a repairer or repair company.
This would ensure safe repairs or replacement of your device.
It is usually not appropriate for a non-expert to tamper with such mechanisms or devices without the live assistance of an expert.

I have a compaq presario desktop with Windows xp Professional (5.1 Build 2600) Service Pack 2. The dvd drive plays vcd's but is not recognizing any dvd. Please help

it is only possible if the dvd lence of the dvd has gone bad. drive has seperate lences for vcd and dvd. get it replaced

Hello,

its either its a lens problem or that was how the CD/DVD Drive was made.

There are some drives that doesn't play white face discs, that is, they select disc and don't play all CD's, so maybe yours fall under this category.

How long have you been using your laptop and has it ever played Cd/Vcd's before?

If it plays them before, then it means your drive's lens is weak, but if it has never played them before, then it means that's how the player was made.

Which ever way, you still have an option of replacing the drive if you wish.
