Farmall super m starts but won't stay running

I recently converted it over to a 12 v neg. ground ign. system with a new 12 v single wire alt. and a 12v hot coil. It previously was a 6v pos. ground .sys. The problem is that it starts and runs for about 5 sec. and then shuts off. It is getting fuel and plenty of spark. I set the timing and set the points to .020. The battery is brand new but when I checked the charge , it was a little low. Do you think the battery being a little low would be causing the tractor to stop running?

SOURCE: it is a 1947 farmall

Two possibilities come to mind:

- the water pump impeller may have so much oxidation on it, it's not pumping enough coolant

- the cooling circuit in the block has so much oxidation in it that it is restricting the coolant flow rate through the block

It's like my arteries, I'm the same age as your tractor, and believe it or not my father once owned that same tractor.

I don't remember, does it have a thermostat? . If it does, you could remove it -- that might help.

SOURCE: hello my dad has a

HI, depends on how it sounds. It is the Gear box that controls the Gear. When it get's damaged it makes a noise as a sign that something is wrong somewhere. And when you select a Gear it will not be able to move it shakes the tractor a little and goes off...

But you might not be certain at this moment in time, depending on the sign it has been given before it started acting this way.

Also you can still check the axle belt. But i would advice you do a General troubleshooting for the tractor to be really sure where the damage is from and if it has damaged another part on the tractor..

Also make sure you check for low oil too, that causes a lot of damage to tractors..

Good luck to you.

Could you be having a fuel supply problem? I have a 1957 Farmal Model 100 and has its own problem caused by moisture building up in the distributor SLOCITYJOHN

I purchased a Farmall Super A it needed a total rewire thought I had a diagram of the wiring, but when I rewired the tractor will not start.

There seems to be plenty of information available online - the wiring is relatively simple and basic, though the 6 volt version with a 4-wire regulator is a little more complex. The 12 volt conversion with a single wire alternator could hardly be simpler.

It seems the ignition is by magneto. Apart from the stop control these units are self contained and if the engine has a good cranking speed and the magneto (and engine) is in good order the engine should start.
The magneto is usually reliable with just the contact breaker points needing periodic attention. When the magneto fails it is a task for a specialist to sort out as a rewind is often needed...

Cant get 8n to run. starts but misses. new plugs, crb, distributor, coil, tank shut-off, ign switch, ceramic resister, ballast resister, fresh gas, but has power to ign switch whether on or off.

If it starts but misses meaning it runs but not on all cylinders?.....then,
Are the spark plug wires in the correct firing order?
Are the spark plug wires in good shape?
Is there compression on all cylinders?
If a valve is bad it won't fire smoothly.
If you pull the plugs are any black with carbon?
(a black carbon coated plug will not fire, especially with a 6 volt system)
Is the distributor car attached fully and correctly?
When the distributor cap is off,is there any side play in the distributor shaft?
Is the point gap correct on the points?
Start the tractor cold and feel the spark plugs, the one or two that are colder than the others are the missing cylinders,if two are cold you could try switching those spark plug wires with each other,in case they are mixed up,and if two are missing are side by side you could have a head gasket leak between cylinder problem.
TIP 1, the BEST THING to do on a Ford 8N is to convert it to 12 volts neg ground.Add a alternator,(76 chev pickup alt fits good) leave the starter as it is (it does care if it's positive or neg ground or 12v) and add a 72 dodge ignition resistor in line to a 12 volt coil.(unless your new 12v coil does not need a resistor)
This set up will increase your fuel economy, add power and start instantly in any temp.
TIP 2,you can use unleaded fuel in a Ford 8n as it already has hardened valve seats.
BUT 10% Ethanol fuel is BAD,it can be used, but shut off the fuel at the tank and let the tractor carb run dry before shutting it off if you are not going to use the tractor with in a few days.

Put a new alternator and battery on the truck but still does not charge

Hi George,
I need year--make--model--engine size.
Usually the alternator needs excite voltage or no charge. The alternator bat terminal should be hot all the time, even with key off, if it isn't, something wrong with that wire circuit.

Is there problems with these alternators?

No it dosn't sound like its the ALT.
You need to check the output alt .Take a volt meter with the vehicle running and the meter set to 20 volts DC black to black red to red on the battery you should 14 to 16 volts 12 or under is no good.
If your ok with voltage shut off vehicle disconnect the NEG terimanl from the battery . Meter on same scale check the battery voltage its a 12 volt battery so it should 12 volts but you say its new .
The problem you may be haveing is a short someware in the vehicle.
You can test for this with the meter on same scale by leaving the NEG cable off the battery vehicle not running red to red black to ground on engine or know good ground under the hood . If you read voltage you have a short some ware in the vehicle and it depends how much voltage you read 1 volt its something small like a switch or something that dosn't draw a lot of AMPS .If its like 5 volts or more then its like a motor something that needs a lot of juice to opperate starting motor window motor seat motor check the connectors to them first its the easyest thing to look at also check the fuse box I have mis labeled fuses that should be 10amp but dont burn out and the wires start to melt .
These are not easy problems to figure and tend to be expensive to have someone else fix so the more you can figure out the more money you will save
Good luck

Farmall Super A Tractor won't crank

wateri in carb. Drain sediment bowl if you have one, install a new gas filter , inline, and then open the drain on the end of carb, small plug, and let all water out. Install a shutoff on gas line and when your done with the maching shut it off and let the tractor run out of gas. That way you will never have a condensation problem. My super A starts 1st time every time due to this precaution.

I have a 68 dodge truck. the alt has 2 wires, 1 power + field. alt i recieved has an extra small wire. how do i compensate

The original alternator you have is a single field unit that has a mechanical regulator. The new one is an isolated field unit that uses a electronic regulator. I don't ever remember seeing one that has been converted to work using the single field on an isolated field. Best you try to obtain the original version.
Otherwise, you'd need to do some re-wiring, following a schematic for a later model that used the electronic regulator. There, one field wire originates at the positive side of the ignition coil, runs through a ballast resistor, then to one field connection on the alternator (either one). a second wire runs from the same wire, on the output side of the resistor, to the center terminal on the regulator, another wire coming from the side (F) terminal of the regulator to the other field connection of the alternator. The regulator must be grounded (it's case is ground)
