How do I clean the INSIDE glass/platen?

The inside of the platen is dirty and needs cleaning. How do I open the scanner portion to clean the glass?

    To open the scanner unit,
    1) Detach the ADF from the top of the scanner
    2) remove the four screws at the top rear of the scanner unit
    3) remove the left and right control panel covers. There are six snaps (3 top and 3 bottom) on each one. See the MP830 Service Manual (google it, I found a pdf for free) for photo illustrated directions. I started at the bottom, once that was free I pulled gently and the top snapped out relatively easily.
    4) remove the four screws holding the control panel unit and pull the control panel out part way.
    5) remove the two screws under the control panel unit.
    6) with a small flat screwdriver gently pry the top half of the scanner housing up, go around the edge and when you come to a tab try to push it in.
Now you can clean the glass.
BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO DISTURB THE SCANNER UNIT ITSELF OR THE RIBBON CABLE - DON'T PUSH IT BACK OR FORTH ON THE RAIL OR IT WILL LOSE ALIGNMENT AND YOU WILL GET NOTHING BUT ERROR MESSAGES. I goofed mine up using Mergatroid's instructions below and am still looking for a solution.

You mean the inside of the scanner glass? (The platten is a part of the print unit),

You'll have to remove the sides and read cover. Unplug the scanner wires and remove the scanner assembly. Separate the document feeder from the scanner bed. Open the covers of the scanner bed (usually there are screws holding it together). Remove the glass and clean it. Reverse the process to reassemble.

Be careful. Canon multipasses are built a little like a Chinese puzzle box. There are little snaps everywhere as well as screws. Watch out you don't force anything and cause the snaps to break.

    Its not so bad...
    1) open the scanner and remove the top (it just lifts out of the two square holes in the back.) Be careful not to stress the wire between the top and the body.
    2) remove the four screws in the back of the scanner (you can seen them if you are looking from the top.)
    3) carefully pry the back top of the scanner from the body - only the back needs to come lose! It will open enough to get a hand in to clean the bottom of the glass.

This procedure should take no more than 5 minutes.

I have a Canon MF 4690 printer. When I scan or copy, it draws a line the length of the sheet. It doesn't do that when I print.

That's usually caused when the platen glass, or ADF glass is dirty or damaged. Try cleaning the platen glass and it's cover, and most importantly the thin strip of glass in the ADF portion of the scanner.

A piece of debris or an ink smear will cause a black strip just like the one you describe.

BTW, if you need instructions on cleaning the ADF strip there's usually instructions in the user's manual.

When I feed pages through the automatic feeder, the copies come out with a streak on them. If I put them directly on the glass it doesn't happen. I have cleaned the platen glass with no result.??

It is a cleaning issue. There is a piece of glass about an inch wide that is next to the platen glass or inside the auto document feeder that is probably dirty depending on your model. Open up the document feeder as if you were clearing an original document jam. Look for a piece of glass inside the ADF, it will run the length of the document feeder. There is probably some dirt or another popular problem is white out. Clean off the glass with glass cleaner or alcohol and it should fix the problem.

The inside of the glass needs to be cleaned. How

The 3170 has a screw in each of the two slots where the lid inserts into the scanner. Remove the lid, remove these screws, and then the top portion of the scanner with the glass slides forward and off. Mine was stiff getting it off, but with some slight twisting and a bit of force it came off. You can then clean the glass.

Scanner/Printer imageCLASS MF6550

Does it do it on prints aswell as copies?

If so open up the Left hand side door if you peer inside at the fuser (hot bit) can you see any damage. if so needs replacement.

Also could be the drum, look in the same area at the green/blue cylinder, these do up to approx 30,000 pages.

Hope this helps.

Mf6530 always says platen glass dirty but I've even cleaned both sides

Found the solution at http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=239&modelid=13170&kbpage=yes , then enter "clean platen glass" in the search window, and select item #1 "ERROR LCD: PLATEN GLASS DIRTY, CLEAN PLATEN GLASS ". This gives step-by-step instructions on how to clean the area dealing with the platen glass.

Black streaks across the page

hello, first of all, make a copy true the adf,and the next on the platen glass,if both copys are good, then the problem is inside the machine,i.e.drum unit or fuser roller damage.
if the strikes only occurs,by using the adf, then cleaning the scanner platen glass,it is the small glass unit!!! on the left side, from the big platen glass..

good luck Sjeuf
