I have the same Tascam 122 MKII tape deack. All my other functions... rew/ffwd/stop /pause all work fine. When I put a tape in and press play or record and play the tape drive won't spin the tape. Can this be fixed by a novice repair person like myself or does it have to be taken to a pro? Also if it's a belt bad, which one would it be?
Thanks, Ed

Dual cassette deck are often poorly built and full of problem with age. They are typically not worth repair. Get a good deck like the Tascam 122 Mk II as these can be repairs.
I have consulted with clients that have dual decks and the cost to repair will get you a Tascam 122 Mk II in restored condition and it works much much better. I should know as I have been repairing decks for 40 years so far.
You may have to get at it by taking the unit's case off.
If I am right you might have to destroy the cassette unless you are very careful. Or, at least, have to cut the tape so as to unwind it from the capstan.
You could also try to open the door just enough to lift it up and off ... as if you were going to clean the tape heads.
if the square belt kinda serpentines in and around a couple pulleys (or did originally) then it did not get put back on correctly. try to think of another way it could be threaded through the pulleys.
You should contact Panasonic, or Matsuchita. They can most likely give you their authorised parts dealer. You may find the head to be a little expensive.
You will have to have an experienced tech install the head for you. He will have to do a tape path alignment with the frequency response calibration.
your camcorder must be broken. a specialist should work on that. go to your nearest technician to help you with. they have a tools for that. hope that helps!
Theres a rewind ,fastforward clutch inside the tape mechanism thats worn, the brake for the supply reel in not releasing completely, or theres hair -dirt- or gunk under the supply reel, or the drive belt needs to be replaced. Now If this wasent part of a tv set combo I would say take it apart and have a peak at some of the things I mentioned. BUT theres extremly HI VOLTAGE inside this puppy and if you dont know the saftey issues related to this , I would highly recommend getting a pro to assist you in this repair. Good Luck
