Please, take this machine to an authorized technician before you attempt to set the timing on your own. An authorized technician will have a device to quickly tell you whether or not the timing is incorrect. If you change the timing yourself and that isn't your problem, you will spend far more money getting 2 problems fixed than the one original problem.
If the machine is making what I describe as a chattering sound, you may be able to clean the bobbin case and the ledge that it sets on and the problem will go away. This bobbin case should be operated with no lubrication. Some repairmen recommend " a drop of oil to make it run quieter". This generally makes it chatter louder. If there is any lube on the bottom of the black bobbin case, wipe it off and wipe the ledge that it rests on.
By the way, if the needle is hitting the raceway, you will be able to see the marks where it is hitting. In a Viking machine, this is normally caused by the "needle to hook clearance", not timing.

SOURCE: Upper thread knots up with bobbin thread when sewing a stich

Thread test
Test your thread quality to start, thread your machine and LIFT the presser foot (this opens the tension disks). Pull your top thread straight back. If you feel no tension no mater how much thread you pull, your thread is good. If that your machine passes that test, then let me know, we can go to step 2. If not, try different spool of thread, same test until you get a smooth pull (tip: always check your thread this way when you thread your machine)
Step 2:
Pull on your threaded bobbin thread while it’s in the machine. Does it pull smooth and even? If so, go to step 3. If not, try a new bobbin (bobbins get bent or distorted if wound too tight).
Clean thoroughly in the hook and bobbin case area and oil 1-2 drop is all.
Thread knotting on the bobbin can be a lot of things but here's some guidance:
Tension:
If the thread is loose on the bottom of the fabric, it's actually the top thread is too loose. Think of 2 little elves playing tug of war in your machine, one on toip and one underneath. If you have loops on bottom, the top needs to pull harder (tighten top tension)
Jamming bobbin case:
If it is damaged from turning out of place once, it could have rough spots on it that makes the thread hang on it, and keeps making it turn over and over. Use a finger nail board (fine sanding) and smoothall rough spots. Then reset the bobbin case taking care to put the notch in the bobbin case in alignment with the proper spot in the machine (basically 5 o’clock) when looking at the round area where the bobbin case goes.

SOURCE: I cannot figure out how th re- thread the bobbin.

http://www.tandtrepair.com/700_TanS_Items.html The second link in the 'free items' is Bobbin Winding. I would have typed this all out for you, but since tandtrepair has it all laid out with pictures I figured I'd just link you to it. Hope this gets you back up and sewing.

Brother sewing machine model AS1430S not picking zig zag stich....on zig zag stich option it is only giving straight stich.....plz help

Try a brand new needle. If that doesn't work, then the machine may be slightly out of time. Search for sewing machine timing or take it for service.

Handwheel won't turn, take-up lever not accessable

Make sure the bobbin winding settings are "in-active" - this could be the position of the pin for the bobbin or the center knob on the handwheel, depending on the model you have.

Open the throat plate and bobbin case to be sure there aren't any threads tangled there. This can stop the handwheel from turning.

The bobbin thread will not loop up tight and catches the top thread on LS1520

When you first start to sew turn your right wheel by hand to take up the bobbin thread to the top of the face plate. Pull the bobbin thread and sewing thread together out for a couple of inches to avoid a jam of thread in your first few stiches.

Tension problems (?)

Well, I could have written this. I bought a used model from a repairman about a year ago. I have a Model 537FA and I'm going to throw it out in the rain leftover from TS Fay if I don't find some kind of help. :) I'm thinking it's a tension issue, but I can't seem to find a fix.

Does your tension on your top thread sometimes tighten to impossible to move in the middle of sewing. I know that mine does this and it causes the top thread to break. I don't know what's causing the bobbin mess.

Maybe someone will help us? Please!
