Flashing LED on front panel

The fuse is located on switched mode power supply board. If the fuse has blown the set will be dead no standby led light on front of set also when you plug the set into a power outlet you should hear the relays clicking. if you don't hear the clicking then the fuse has blown or another part of the power supply has failed and will require service.

Model? what if any lights on front of set come on? If total dead unplug and look for fuse connected where power cord enters set, as much as I can suggest without more info.

In most cases, if the main power supply fails, the low voltage supply that provides enough power so the set can receive input from your remote, also lives on to signal problems, often by flashing the power LED in a pattern.

In your case, apparently the low voltage supply is also dead.

This can be caused by both supplies being damaged from a line surge caused by 'dirty' AC power, or a spike from a lightning strike somewhere in your power network.

These spikes can travel long distance so a strike need not be all that proximate to do damage.

If no fuse holder is found on the back of the set, it may be necessary to remove the back panel for access.

If you choose to do this, it is safer to leave the set unplugged overnight to allow any hazardous voltages to discharge.

Look for a separate board or an area which has larger components in it.

These will be cylindrical cases and larger block-like parts.

If there is a user-replaceable fuse in the set at all, it will most likely be in that area.

If this damage was caused by a high voltage spike replacing the fuse may be fruitless and if a replaced fuse blows again, then other circuits have been damaged and major boards will have to be replaced as well.

The cost of reviving a lightning damaged set of any kind can often exceed the cost of replacing the whole set.

Even the most primitive plug strip contains components that afford some protection against this kind of damage but the best protection can be had with a 'whole house' surge suppressor.

These cost ~$200 US and feature insurance against appliance losses up to $10,000.

They require access to the main breaker box, safety precautions and a few tools for installation.

what you need is trouble shooting and a good digital tester to fix that problem. since the problem is power off start at the back light check if their is a small maldischarge at the module then check if their is a click on relay and then if the front LED is turn from red to green. then check the power supply if normal, check the low and high voltage except the stand by supply. then check the Y board the Va and Vs supply look for the blown fuse. and then the Z board check the 5v and Va supply, check also blown fuse.

You have a diode arrangement in your power supply that converts the AC power to DC power so that it can be stepped up to operate the high voltage power supply of the set. If those diodes are blown, which happens frequently in a storm, then you have no voltage to your high voltage. You are going to have to check that diode arrangement by making a continuity check both ways on each diode. A diode blocks voltage one way but lets it pass the other way, thus producing a DC voltage.

I don't know your set but the way it failed is noteworthy and possibly revealing.
Plasma sets have a little in common with the sets of 30 years ago; they use phosphors to convert electrons into light and the electrons are accelerated with a high voltage.
Loss of the video first indicates the high voltage section (or separate supply using input from a main supply) failed in a way causing the main supply to fail with the loss of audio and complete death.
If it was my set; I would pull the AC plug, allow the set to remain overnight to allow any residual voltage to decay, remove the back, look for a separate assembly the seems related to the AC cord coming in. This should be the main power supply and will have a primary fuse which is likely blown. If it isn't soldered in, replace it. If it blows again, you will need a tech to proceed. The second failure means the high voltage section (or separate supply) has a component failed that is causing the main supply to fail or at least overload so replacing it again isn't logical or productive. If it doesn't blow, you will probably only have audio and a separate fuse in the high voltage section has blown and protected the main supply from damage. It isn't likely that replacing the supply (or supplies) is a straightforward DIY project and there is a slim chance even if you did, that the plasma display is faulty and that the failure would repeat itself.
Because of the problems with shipping a set of this size unless you have retained the original packing material means you will need on-site service and it will be expensive.
It's a pity, but a fact, that our much more complex sets are just not as reliable (at least yet) than the mature designs of the earlier conventional TVs.

Ok.. What is the status of the power LED at the front. Does it blink, change color a few seconds after its turned on? Do you notice any clicking noise from the set?

Please provide this info so that we can continue with the diagnosis.

Thanks for the quick answer. I purchased the set in 2005 and it lives outside under an overhang on my patio in humid South Florida. Unfortunately, I couldnt count the red flashes before it went completely dead. Think it was 4or 5. This would correspond with a possible fuse failure on the Power supply. I bought the online service manual, I just wish I knew what to do with it!! The fuses both seem to check out ok on a continuity check. any ideas? Thanks, Charlie

I finally got my hands on a manual. I haven't checked as yet, but there is a 4A 250V - 5X20mm Time Lag fuse (slow blow) under a plate next to AC plug on the rear panel. I pulled the back panel to do a visual and didn't see anything burnt or fried. I'll get back to you if I discover the fuse was blown.

You have no high voltage, like many in this forum, this model of Philips has some of the same problems. Look around here you may find the answer to your set. If not check Vertical IC, TDA8177, audio ic on signal board up front on left. check Power supply first for blown fuse, 1000, 2004, 1300, 1900 etc. No sound or pic means something is open. Does set has L E D lights on front of set?
