SOURCE: Cannot get Sony Handycam to connect via USB to my laptop

Hi Ken,
I have a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD610 and I had a simular problem today when trying to download videos I took as a test. I downloaded the software, then connected the power cord from the wall to the camera, then the USB cord from the camera to the computer. The software was suppose to automatically open up and recognize that the camera was plugged into the computer, but it didn't. I could not get the videos to download. So I called the Sony company and they were so nice and helpful. The man stayed with me and walked me through entirely on how to do it. You see I didn't finalize the disk. I only had DVD-R discs and I didn't realize that it must be finalized. After we finalized the disc, then I was told to take the disc out of the camera and insert it into the computer disc drive and then he proceeded to show me how to get them downloaded. If you need more step by step instructions, please let me know. Good Luck
Helen

Transfer vidoes to a computer using a USB connection

Consider NOT using the USB connection.
The best way to download videos (and pictures) from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy videos and pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files.

SONY DSR PD 170 OR 170P IS THE CAMERA MODEL AND LAPTOP IS SONY VAIO VPCEG18FG. The camera has a DV firewire port and lap top has only 3 usb ports. I tried connecting it with a cable that ha s firewire...

This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the Windows 7 Operating System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port. You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer. The Firewire to USB cable won't work with your camcorder, you will always end up with this error.
Click the link below for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

You Sony vaio laptop doesn't have firewire ports ,in this case you will need to purchase and install an firewire card ..>>

If you are using a Windows XP Operating System then you have to install the USB Streaming Driver in the Computer from the supplied Software disk with the Computer.
Check this Link for the instruction to transfer video to a Computer using USB Streaming.

If you do not have the supplied Software disk then I suggest that you use the i.LINK cable to transfer the video.

I purchased a Pinnacle Dazzle to connect my Sony DCR-HC38 to my computer. I do not know how to connect the camcorder to the Dazzle device.

Sony DCR-HC38E should have an interface called 1394, or the firewire. so you need to use a FireWire cable to connect it to your computer's firewire interface, some laptops have it built-in, If you don't have one on your computer, you can either purchase a IEEE1394/FireWire adapter, which should be under 100 or even $50.
Connector Type1.0 x Composite video/audio output , 1.0 x S-Video output , 1.0 x USB , IEEE 1394 (FireWire/i.LINK)

This model seem to have Firewire Port built in.

Then the solution is simple-use Firewire cable to capture video into your laptop. This is the standard hardware set recognized by any OS and most Video Editing software.Simply plug in your cam to your computer via the cable.Your laptop should immediately "see" your cam.The rest is then easy.

Oops...forgot to ask the make&model of your laptop. If it does not have that firewire port built-in.Then you've got quite a trouble...

Download video from camera to computer

Do you hve a FireWire output in the camera? (IEEE)
If yes, connect it to your computer.(You need a firewire card in your computer too ($10 on ebay))
----
If you do not have a firewire, you will have to use your video out of the camera to capture. Then you will need a TV card/Capture card to capture the video. (you can just plug in your AV out from the camera to the capture/tv card and use the software come with it.)
------------------
You can simply use Windows Movie Maker to get your videos to yor computer.

Cheers!!!
