How can I change the battery on my Navigon 7100 GPS? I tried instructions for a similar unit based on a Google search and opened it up but the 7100 is built differently; could not get it open and was afraid of breaking something. So I put it back together and run it only off the car cig lighter. I contacted two online vendors of the batteries and asked how to exchange, got no reply. Can anyone help? the unit works fairly well with antenna though maps are outdated and you can't get updates or service anymore.
The battery can be replaced but it will require you to remove the old one and find a matching voltage and sized battery on ebay. you will have to change the connector to the one off the original battery pack.
It has been a while since i have done one of this model but it can be done.

if your sd card is OK, there should be an update program on it, you have to go to windows ce on the unit to run this program. to do this hold the bottom right key while booting...

If your useing Windows XP or Vista, drivers arn't needed..Windows "sees" the gps unit as another drive.
If you want to use the logbook , the files are in excel format.
the owners manual shows where the files are stoerd on the memory card!!

I have same problem I went to their website. www.navigon.com/site/us/en/my_navigon. In there you register your device and also in freshmaps put your Freshmaps code to activate.once activate download updated software from the windows of maps and software in Navigon 3 windows. You will find picture of your device hit on that picture to downlaod software update in your computer to save to your desktop. It will take atleast 45 to 1 hour depend on speed don't turn off cmputer in between.
Than get 4 gb sd card put to slot to your computer either directly or through Card reader whichever it suits you .when card is in computer wait till it shows removable media inserted.
Than hit on icon on your computer desktop where you downlaoded software update, mesasage box will appear to download to sd card hit yes it will download entire software wait till it says downlaod complete.
After download complete go back to same website and hit on window says software updates hit on that and it will downlaod most updataed version of software to sd card.
After completion of downlaod completion romove sd card be carefull to check on that says eject sd card hit on that than remove the card after otherwise it will destroy the pogram in sd card.
Put your sd card to device and there you go it will work.
Since new software is large and it requires more space than old one ols card will not work even after download of new software. Please buy 4 gb sd new card and follow the procedure.Since new software consumes almost 2 gb I recommend to purchase 4 gb sd card .please don't buy micro sd card with adapter it won't work.

Yes, I've found the battery at two places, one on eBay, but what I can't do is open the case all the way to get at the insides to find and pull out the battery. The only published 'manual' with photos was for a different unit with an in between 'faceplate' but this does not have that--I can't open the case--something is holding it together inside and gentle force won't separate it. I don't want to break it. I've taken out all the screws, worked along the edge, gotten it to open like a **** or an oyster -- just a crack, maybe 1/8 inch in one spot. Does anyone have a .pdf, or is there a website that shows with photos the steps to take to separate it and get at the battery pack?
Thank you!
BTW--if the fellow who was saying below that you must have an unlock code is still following this, I believe all you have to do is press the reset 'pin' with a paper-clip and it starts you out in the beginning. Regardless of software update, the unit uses the SD as RAM as well as storage, so you should copy whole SD card into a desktop folder and then copy it into a 4GB SD. It did three firmware updates for me and then said it couldn't recognize it. I thought that was programmed in on purpose so you'd get off their web site as they were shutting down then and Garmin had bought them out already.
Meanwhile there is no real Navigon site for their units or mapware updates and there is no one at Garmin who answers queries for support on these units and no downloadable pdf files that I can find. I do have a pdf manual if someone needs it but it certainly is not a repair manual and it mentions batteries in about five places without telling you a thing about where they are or how to change them.
Ah--Thanks, it feels like there is a hidden screw but I couldn't find it, thought maybe there was a side insert one.
Those other folks having trouble--I found a cheap antenna on eBay for less than $15 bucks and it made a world of difference in performance--and I was getting those odd, out of place events and instructions where there shuldn't be. I found simply shutting it off, popping out the SD card, and pushing in the reset pin got it back working right for me. But it made a huge difference to have that little antenna plug inserted properly. Unit was 'haywire' without antenna in my vehicle and location.
I couldn't find any hidden screws under the labels--but I did notice that the round plate in the middle where the mount connects in thte back was a plasic snap in--I pried it out using a light, mini-screwdriver and you can see the battery and connector sitting in there. But there is a thin plastic housing that the center round plastic piece pops into, and it looks fragile--can't figure out how to get at the battery-it lookslike itmight slide out that hole if I could get it open; wonder if I could pivot the metal outer ring the mount fits into and get it to move out and make the opening?
Thanks for the advice--the only two labels were on the bottom, scraped off the one,and the unit ID and serial number was the second and I couldn't feel anything but smooth plastic under it, sodidn't scrape it off. If this brings back any memories--of going through the center of the back where the window mount hooks on,and you can recall how to actually get the rest of it out, I'd appreciate knowing that--I think it might be the solution, but that's a gut feel only.--Thanks.
Solved it, finally. Remove all four screws with small phillips head magnetic screwdriver. With the screen down on flat surface, begin to pry with small thin screwdriver or even kitchen knife, on bottom left opposite SD slot and push blade in, turning to the side slowly--little plastic catch tab inside will separate and corner will left up. Work your way up side of case, and repeat twist with thin narrow screwdriver (1/8") or kitchen knive, plastic tab is near middle on both sides; across bottom, two tabs, both about 1 inch or so in from edge, then do top two, and then do the single one on the right side. That's it, whole unit will lift off. Peel back tape covering battery connector and then gently work it out. eBay has matching battery in HK so two weeks or so delivery, free shipping. Same connector appears to be used. Battery appears to be held onto bottom of board with double-sided tape, possibly adhesive; am waiting for replacement before I pry it off. You don't need to remove round plastic insert in center.
