How to reset kwikset pwerbolt 1000

A former tenant installed a kwikset powerbolt 1000 at my rental property and the tenant that just left lost the owner's manual. I need to change the battery and the code, but don't have the instructions. I have keys to the lock so can open the door, but we want to be able to use the keyless system.

We just moved into a house that has a Kwickset 898 system. The prior owner never used it and does not know the code. Can not contact the prior owner to that one. We also have the key but would like to use the keypad. Please help us with a User's Guide and way to reset the code.

6. Resetting the code: - please follow these instructions to reset the code on your Powerbolt 1000 unit:

  • Remove the inner cover plate from the lock.
  • Locate the small round program button near the left side of the circuit board (Red or Black).
  • To program, the latch should be extended out in the lock position, press the reset button once, then enter your 4-8 digit code on the exterior keypad, then immediately press the middle lock button on the exterior keypad. You will hear a beep. Re-enter the same 4-8 digit code to confirm, the latch should retract. This completes the programming. This signals that your code has been accepted.
  • To enter a second code, follow the same procedures as in step 3, but this time press the reset button twice then enter your code.
7. Replacing the batteries: - please follow these instructions to replace the batteries on your Powerbolt 1000 unit:
  • Remove inner cover plate located above the thumb turn on the inside of the door
  • Replace all 4 batteries with quality alkaline AA batteries. (Do not use rechargeable batteries.)
  • Ensure that the batteries are correctly oriented or unit will not function properly.

8. Changing the password code: - please follow these instructions:
  • Manually put the bolt in extended (lock) position. Press PROGRAM button once, enter new 4 - 8 digit code and then press LOCK.
  • Press PROGRAM button twice, enter the same new code and then press LOCK once.
  • Press PROGRAM button three times, enter the same new code and then press LOCK once.

These stept will program only the new code you enter for your unit.

  • Let is sit for 1 minute then put the batteries back in and wait another minute.

Go to www.kwikset.com. Click on "Customer support" located at the bottom of the page in the middle of two other options. Click on FAQ's located to your right and also below the top picture, either one will take you to the same page. This will open a new window with a list of questions. Click on #14: "How do I troubleshoot my powerbolt 1000?" I think this will answer all your questions on the 1000 model. It's just like an instruction manual. This was so helpful, I'm sure you could find stuff on other models as well.

Pop off the plastic cover on the inside. (Instructions are printed inside the cover)

Press the black 'Program' button - it will beep 3-times...enter your 4-8 digit code and press the lock key to activate your new code. Try your new code and see if the deadbolt retracts.

For multible codes...press the "program' button twice and follow the same procedure

I have to change batteries every two weeks. What's wrong with this Powerbolt 1000?

Kwikset's warranty covers one year electronics defects and lifetime coverage for the mechanical movement and finish.
Here is a link to it:

You can contact them from there for further assistance.

Powerbolt 1000 uses up batteries in a week

Get in touch with Weiser Canada via the contact info on their web site (http://www.weiserlock.ca/wei-eng/contact.htm) for a replacement under warranty (the Powerbolt has a lifetime mechanical guarantee). i have two rental properties with Powerbolt locks on them and have found - over the past 3 years - that it's safest to just replace the batteries on a 4 month schedule to ensure the tenants don't get locked out! The batteries actually last for longer than ~ 6 months, but i prefer to be on the safe side ...

Cheers,
