Losing digital picture with HD TV

What is your TV source? The Polaroid LCD-2000 only has a NTSC (analog) tuner. Most OTA stations switched to ATSC signals a few years ago and a converter box is required to watch the TV. (A few low power TV stations still broadcast in NTSC but you need to be fairly close to the transmitter to receive the channel.) If you have cable, check if they have migrated to digital cable (QAM for unencrypted channels). If that is the case, you'll need a cable box.

With a digital-to-analog OTA converter box, you can still lose station reception due to the signal strength cliff. Depending on your area, you may need an external antenna or to check the direction of the antenna. I know I have to rotate the outdoor antenna every so often. It shifts in high wind. Even if the antenna only moves 5 degrees, we will lose the signal for half of the stations.

It depends where you are. Digital has replaced analog signals. If you don't receive channels, ask a friend or neighbours on the situation with their TV. If their hd TV are working properly, then you may have not tuned the TV properly. Have you chacked the Antenna cable? Yes? Then tune it with care and watch what happens. Normally, the TV will show if a signal has been detected. If you have no signal, you need a technician because there are more than one reason this is happening, probably you haven't connected the Antenna cable. Who knows. Again, check the antenna cable, is it lose or wrongly inserted? If you have a small digital TV, connect the antenna to that TV and see if the channels are working. If not, it's probably the cable from the wall socket to the TV (change the cable) or the Antenna cable had been a meal for a rodent on the roof. As I said, who knows?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "pause", but if you mean the picture freezes or pixellates and the sound cuts outs then it's caused by a bad signal - know as "Digital Cliff Edge" - see attached image.

If you are using an aerial, check all your cables are connected properly and that your aerial is securely mounted, pointing in the right direction and none of the elements have become detached - particularly the dipole where the co-axial cable attaches.

If you are using a dish, again check all your cables are connected properly and that your dish is securely mounted. If the bolts are loose and you can move the dish by hand, then it's possible that your dish has moved from the correct alignment. You will ideally need a signal meter to correct this although it can be done by trial and error.

You should also note that dishes are susceptible to signal-loss during bad weather, particularly strong wind, heavy rain and snow. If you are only losing picture in bad weather, there isn't much you can do apart from making sure the dish is rigidly fixed.

If your aerial/dish is OK, try replacing your fly-leads (the short section from the wall socket to the TV) and/or the cable from the aerial/dish to your TV.

Hello: In standard defintion the picture is showing in 480p which is the lowest resolution for LCD televisions, The picture will only look as good as the signal its getting, If you have cable then it should look some what better even with std defintion. The Diamonds/triangles are caused from a weak digital signal or weak broadcast station. This is a normal occurance for LCD televisions as the picture is put on the screen in blocks. I would not say your television is bad, just a poor or weak signal, If you are using a digital antenna and not cable, then you might try purchasing a signal amplifier to boost the signal before going into the set.

It sounds like it is loseing signal, check your connections, and make sure you have the correct cable

If your getting your signal via a satelite receiver or HD cable box, its likely that the sound dropouts and picture freeze are the result of marginal signal strength. Does the TV ever do this when using a DVD player? If not, its certainly the quality of the signal.

If the TV is at fault, the problem will be on the digital board.

Unfortunately, I'm in Australia and not familiar with New York TV transmissions, however, the reception principals are the same.

Your signals are most likely bouncing off walls etc in your apartment with several 'reflections' being picked up by your indoor antenna.

This 'multipath' reception causes errors in the digital signals.

Your receiver can correct a certain amount of errors, but if there are too many, your picture will pixelate and the sound will make loud noises and then you will lose reception altogether.

The fix for this problem is connecting to a roof-mounted antenna and signal distribution system. Most apartment buildings have one, however some only distribute cable channels.

There is a possibility of a fault with your TV, but from what you describe, it sounds like a signal issue.

Have a chat to your building manager and ask what system they use for FTA reception in your building.. perhaps there's a fault that they are not aware of.

Part of your message I cant really understand but if this helps you out at all, Try to get a new box from your service provider. I have been hearing other people having problems losing signal from HDMI enabled cable boxes, if it doesnt work then just try your standard Component cables, they can still output 1080p from an xbox 360 and thats better than the 1080i you will get from cable. Some TV's just dont keep the power flowing to the HDMI reciever for some reason or another. The component cables shouldn't give you any problems though. Good luck.
