Model 2780R intermittant Picture & Sound Failure

Cable hookup - direct from Time Warner. No boxes in the path. The TV works normally for a while - 5 minutes or several hours, then the sound goes buzzy loud and the picture goes to zigzags & snow. On all channels. It seems like an overload. The video input works just fine, fed from a VCR even when the antenna/cable input is blitzed. So I can always use the video input. I tried decreasing the signal strength (working on the overloaded input hypothesis) by inserting a couple of splitters, which should have reduced the signal by about 10 db. This did not work. Picture quality is just fine when it is working on any channel or on video. No other problems. If I wait a while, then it works fine again for an indeterminate time, before failing again.

I like the possibility of a bad connection in the tuner and will see if the problem responds to impact. We just moved about 250 miles and the set (in original box) travelled about 400 miles getting here. Thanks.

The set has loose power conections to the tuner and judging by the model it might have other loose conections in the chassis, the loose conections need to be resoldered and might not be easy to find, try taping the side of the set to see if it reacts while is doing the problem.Be safe and call a technician unless you are familiar with tv service.

Got the digital set up box from Time Warner Cable but they did not include hook-up instructions.

If you have an HDTV, you can hookup HDMI cable from set-top-box to the HDTV's HDMI input and select that input on the TV using your remote. If you have analog TV, you can hookup using RCA cables (yellow to yellow, white to white). You could also call Time-Warner for assistance.

You have to program the remote to work with your specific model tv. If it still doesnt work after that call your cable provider and ask them for another remote.

it's probably the Time Warner cable box that have issue and not the TV. Try using a DVD player and test the same input, it should work fine.

I have Time Warner cable. I just bought a new Sony LCD HD tv and the sound and the video are out of sync on some channels - HD and non HD I am using a HDMI cable. Any solutions that you know of?

Yes there is a simple solution. First, for some reason., Time Warner cable boxes have SERIOUS HDMI issues, including no pic, intermittent pic and sound and the one that you are having. The easy fix is to hook the TV to the cable box using the component connections instead of the HDMI. Normally I would suggest getting the cable box replaced, but I have seen customers exchange cable boxes 3 or 4 times and still have the problem or have a new problem. Use the component connections and be sure to let me know if this works. If it does, be sure to rate this solution. Thanks!

Picture in picture problem

When you use the Time Warner Digital box, you're using the tuner inside that box rather than the tuner inside your TV to select a channel. Picture in picture TV's have two tuner's inside so you can view two channels, but they can only tune the analog channels from your cable company, and only if it's hooked up in a manner that will permit this to happen.

So you only have one digital tuner (the Time Warner Box) so you can only view one channel at a time even though your TV supports Picture in Picture.

It MAY be possible to have limited use of the PIP if you connect your TV in a different way. Your Time Warner box is most likely connected to your TV set with composite cables, those are the Yellow, Red, White cables. If you buy a coaxial cable splitter and split the cable before it goes into the Time Warner box you can then run a coax cable into both the Time Warner box and the coax input on your TV. This would allow you to tune the analog Time Warner channels with both of your TV's tuners. In my area I think the first 60 channels or so are still available in analog, but there is no way to watch any of the higher premium channels without the Time Warner box.

If you go through these steps and you select the coax input on your TV your PIP will work on the lower channels. It MAY be possible to tell your TV to display the input from the composite cables on one of the PIP screens and the input from the coax on the other, but I kind of doubt it.

I know this sounds complicated and if you're not familiar with the way all this works it is complicated. The reason lots of people won't respond to this kind of question on this site is because there is no easy fix and by trying to help I run the risk of getting a bad rating. I don't get paid for this, I just like trying to help, so if I have not explained this in a way that's helpful to you please ask some additional questions before you give me a bad rating. Thanks.
