SOURCE: how do I restore factory settings on my dell

  1. Restoring a Dell System Running Windows XP.

Turn off and reboot your computer. When you see the Windows flash screen, depress "CTRL" and "F11". Be sure to press them simultaneously and release them simultaneously.

Select "Restore" in the "Dell PC to restore by Symantec" window and press "Enter".

Highlight and select "Confirm" when the message shows that you wiill lose all data if you continue. This will begin the restore process. It usually takes about 10 minutes or so. When it's done, you should receive a message that states the system recovery process was successful.

Select "Finish" to complete the process and restart your system.
  2. Step 6 Restore a Dell System Running Windows Vista

Shutdown and restart your computer. Keep pressing "F8" until you see the "Advanced Boot Options" menu. You must depress the keys before the Windows Logo screen appears. If you wait until after the screen appears and then press "F8", it's too late and you'll have to reboot the system and try again.

Navigate to the "Repair your computer" option

Select the appropriate language and click "Next".

Sign onto the system as an administrator. Without administrative privileges, you will be unable to perform the system restore.

Select "Dell Factory Image Restore" and click "Next".

Place a check in the check box next to the text that says "Yes, reformat hard drive and restore System Software to factory condition" and click "Next".

Click "Finish" to complete the process. This will reboot your computer.

SOURCE: I need to do a

Greetings,
I downloaded the manual for your netbook from Dell - the Dell factory restore relies upon Vista System Recovery Options - not very straightforward.

Here's a link to the manual - followed by instructions:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xlob/dtg/en/en_dtg.zip

Windows Vista: Dell Factory Image Restore
1 Turn on the computer. When the Dell logo appears, press several times to access the Vista Advanced Boot Options window.
2 Select Repair Your Computer.
The System Recovery Options window appears.
3 Select a keyboard layout and click Next.
4 To access the recovery options, log on as a local user. To access the command prompt, type administrator in the User name field, then click OK.
5 Click Dell Factory Image Restore.
NOTE: Depending upon your configuration, you may need to select Dell Factory Tools, then Dell Factory Image Restore.
The Dell Factory Image Restore welcome screen appears.
6 Click Next.
The Confirm Data Deletion screen appears.
NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with Factory Image Restore, click Cancel.
7 Click the check box to confirm that you want to continue reformatting the hard drive and restoring the system software to the factory condition, and then click Next.
The restore process begins and may take five or more minutes to complete.
A message appears when the operating system and factory-installed applications have been restored to factory condition.
8 Click Finish to reboot the system.

Dell Inspiron MINI 1012 Laptop Screen 10.1 LED flickers

soldbyajt,

It sounds as though the video card has gone bad in your system. There are a couple of things to try to eliminate the lcd.
If the LCD on the system shows no display or has other problems, here are some basic steps to take:
  1. If the LCD is not displaying any video, connect an external monitor to eliminate a no-POST problem. A good image on the external monitor eliminates a video card problem or a POST problem.
  2. Connect an external monitor when possible for all LCD-related problems to help eliminate a possible software or video card problem.
  3. If the LCD has lines on the screen, check the system during POST as well as system setup to determine if the lines are present in all modes of operation.

If you cannot get any video by connecting an external monitor then your motherboard will need to be replaced. The reason for the motherboard replacement is because your video card is soldered onto the motherboard.

    Thank You,

My Dell inspiron mini 10 is just over 1 year old not used very much at all, last week for no reason there is no display on the screen, I tried to reboot on battery power and ac no luck. Thanks Frank.

There are 3 mini 10 models sold by Dell. The Inspiron 1010 (Mini 10), Insprion 1012 (Mini 10) and the Insprion 1018 (Mini 10v). Depending on which model you have, you can try to connect an external monitor and see if you get a display. The 1012 and the 1018 have a 15 pin VGA plug on the left side of the laptop and the 1010 has an HDMI jack for video. If you get a display then your LCD display is bad and needs to be replaced.

The laptop screen will not come on. it shows the dell powerup logo then goes black. The monitor lights are on so it is getting power but it isn't showing anything on the screen

If it's a Mini 1012 there is a VGA (15 pin) connector on the left side of the laptop. You can try to connect an external monitor to see if you get a display. If you do, then your LCD display has a problem and needs to be replaced. If you have a Mini 1010 there is an HDMI jack on the right side of the laptop where you can connect an external monitor.
