I have an Acer AL1715 17" LCD. Turns on ok but after a time will suddenly make a popping sound and totally lose all power (screen goes off and green light goes out). It must still retain a charge because when the power cord is pulled out for about 1 min and plugged in again, the monitor will come back on as normal. There is no set time that it will run for. It can turn off in a few minutes or could last hours before turning off. Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause, please?
SOURCE: Monitor does not work
sounds like a slightly damaged power supply. try powering up with an equivalent supply. if only an ac wall cord is plugged in for power, then internal supply is at fault
SOURCE: monitor goes black
Sorry to have to tell you this, but this is common in LCD monitors. The reason that it is going black when it boots is for one of two reasons. You either have a bad power supply that powers your LCD or your LCD's backlight is blown. These can be repaired or you can purchase a new one. But if it goes black 9 times out of 10 is because the backlight is bad. These can be repaired!
SOURCE: ACER AL1715 POWER SUPPY BOARD AR577 VP-583 TURNS OFF AFTER START UP
I have an Acer 1715 that also turns on, then goes dark after a few seconds. The capacitors on the AR577 supply/inverter board were good, but I replaced them anyway. There is a good write-up with photos at:
http://www.electronicrepairguide.com/acer-al712-lcd-monitor-repair.html
This shows the board nicely and capacitors for the 1712 Acer, which is very close to the 1715.
This didn't cure my problem, and after chasing signals, I believe the problem is a bad inverter chip. The SG6841SZ on the back side of the board is a 20 pin gull wing surface mount package that drives the FETs to switch voltage off and on to the high voltage transformer. I know the diodes and FETs work because it comes on. The transformer drive stops when the backlights go out, though the voltages are all there. The 5V drive signal from the control board is there, so the problem has to be the inverter, or all 4 FETs.
If I can get hold of the part and it fixes it, I'll post it here.

Acer what a waste of time this company is. lets all by IBM's / NEC's again atleast they are in for the long hall

mccampbell71 Probably a failure of inverter circuit(dc to ac 600-1100vac) to light-up (sustain) "cold-cathode-fluorescent lamps" causing the "switch-mode-power-supply" to go into full or partial SHUTDOWN mode. Black Screen of Death strikes again!!! The Question I have is why did you BUY a "black-brick" supply? Did the other one fall out of the car or get run over by a train? Only you will be able to make the decision of to REPAIR or Trade-in for new. You are no different than 5000 others worldwide (all brands) who have monitor's with BSOD! Yes, some (75-90%) can be saved to work 1-3 more years! Read some of my other responses in my profiles (12fixlouie aka louie12fix) to learn of the options you have open to you. Bye for now 12fixlouie If this info was of some use please rate on fixya.
