Hi there,
I bought a new Dell Inspiron Notebook about 2 months ago and I have problem with the "shut down" function. Many times when I chose "shut down" it actually restarts instead of shutting down. That happens all the time, even though I hit the correct button very carefully. I even downloaded an updated bios.
Any help?
Best,
Rob
I'M GLAD THINGS ARE LOOKING UP! I KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT CAN BE WHEN OUR COMPUTER "FRIEND" ACTS UP. PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW IT TURNS OUT. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU!

ROB, TRY GOING INTO POWER OPTIONS AND GO THROUGH THE SETTING THERE. IT HAS DIFFERENT SETTING THAT SAY THINGS LIKE " WHEN I CLOSE THE LID ON MY LAPTOP I WANT IN TO GO TO SLEEP" ETC. YOU SHOULD FIND A SETTING THERE THAT HANDLES WHEN I HIT SHUT DOWN I WANT THE COMPUTER TO I.E. SLEEP, HIBERNATE,STANDBY. I THINK YOU SHOULD GET THE IDEA. CHECK THOSE AND SEE IF THIS HELPS SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM.
ROB, SORRY IT DIDN'T HELP. I HAVE HAD A SIMILIAR PROBLEM WITH MY DELL DESKTOP WHEN I HAVE TRIED TO GO INTO HIBERNATION, THE DELL HAS POPPED OUT TO DESKTOP AND THEN WON'T GO INTO HIBERNATION AGAIN AND ONLY WILL SHUT OFF. I NOW USE A NEW HP 17" LAPTOP,9700 SERIES, SO I'VE BEEN AWAY FROM THE DELL, WHICH MY WIFE USES. HAVE YOU TRIED GOING INTO HIBERNATION INSTEAD OF SHUTOFF? DOES THAT WORK? I HAVE TO ADMIT I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE WHY THE DELL JUMPS OUT OF ONE STATE TO ANOTHER, BUT WAS ABLE TO SET THE OPTIONS ON THE HP THAT I TOLD YOU ABOUT. I DID TRY THEM ON THE DELL AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE HELPED MINE,4600 SERIES, REBUILT WITH EXTRA RAM,NEW 2.0 USB CARD, VIDEO CARD, AND ADDITIONAL HARD DRIVE. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU TRY THE DELL ONLINE SITE AND SEE IF THEY HAVE ANY INFO ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. IF I CAN HELP MORE, JUST REPLY.
IT'S POSSIBLE, BUT I THINK THEY ARE OVER SIMPLIFING THINGS. A BIOS UPDATE CAN'T HURT, BUT I REALLY DOUBT IF IT WILL CHANGE THIS PROBLEM, WHICH SEEMS TO HAPPEN ON HP MACHINES. SEEMS MORE LIKE A CODE PROBLEM, BUT IT CAN'T HURT TO TRY WHAT THEY SAID. LET ME KNOW HOW THINGS WORK. IF NOT WE WILL WORK SOME MORE. I HAVE LOTS OF TIME. ITS ALITTLE AFTER MIDNIGHT HERE IN WA. AND I'M USUALLY UP TILL 1:00AM OR LATER. I'LL CHECK IN TOMORROW AND SEE HOW THINGS ARE GOING! DON'T GIVE UP YET!

Thank you very much, but it didn't help, I just tried it. The problem is that sometimes it shuts down and sometimes it restarts, without giving any reason for doing so...
Thank you again. I also have the proble, with hibernation. Sometimes it works, sometimes it shuts off and sometimes it restarts when I hit the hibernation button...I will contact the Dell people again. I had them on the phone once and they told me to make the bios update, which would be the only thing that acn help. Do you think it could just be a software problem?
i made the bios update already, and today is a public holiday. so i will probably only be able to reach them on monday. will keep you updated, and many thanks again!
